To Implement New Global D-GPS System |
The National
Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is implementing a new Global
Differential GPS (GDGPS) system, developed by Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL),
that provides seamless global real-time positioning at sub-20-cm vertical
accuracy and sub-10-cm horizontal accuracy for dual frequency GPS receivers.
Such accuracy has previously been available only on a selected local basis,
through real-time kinematic (RTK) techniques, which have enabled decimeter-level
(and better) real-time GPS-based positioning on a few kilometers local
scale.
Beginning in early
2001, even areas without RTK capability could access real-time positioning
at the decimeter level, without performance degradation. Many applications
require precise real-time, onboard knowledge of a platform's position and
velocity as a critical component. For regional applications, wide-area
differential systems such as the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA)
Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS), the U.S. Coast Guard's Continuously
Operating Reference Station (CORS), and various commercial differential systems
have provided meter-level positioning. However, global (ground, airborne,
and spaceborne) real-time positioning at the decimeter level has never been
attempted nor achieved because of perceived technical and cost challenges.

NR-1 Team Visits Kokes Marine Technologies |
The United
States Navy's NR-1 (Nuclear Research) submarine team -- while attending the
Underwater Intervention Convention in Tampa Florida last month -- spent a
great deal of time at the Kokes Marine Technologies booth, reports Gregory
Kokes, president of the firm. The company which leases the U.S. Corsair RS-1
and U.S. Constellation RS-2 submarines was of extreme interest to the group.
Until now, the NR-1 was the only true submarine in the world performing
scientific tasks for the marine research community.
But news of Kokes
Marine Technologies' RS-1 and RS-2 subs has brought that monopoly to an end.
Also found taking a keen look at the submarine was Carl Brashear, famed Navy
diver whose life story was recently portrayed by Cuba Gooding Jr. in the
hit film Men of Honor. Brashear and Kokes discussed the recent advances in
underwater technologies and displayed excitement over this particular approach
to underwater exploration and inspection. "What a fantastic idea!" Brashear
said." In my wildest imagination I would never have thought it possible."

Multiple Orders From Leading Labs |
RD Instruments
Inc, USA, announces multiple orders from two of the world's leading marine
scientific establishments. The orders, for a total of 15 acoustic Doppler
current profiling (ADCP) systems are from the Scripps Institution of
Oceanography, USA (SIO) and for the United Kingdom National Marine Equipment
Pool, hosted by the Southampton Oceanography Centre (SOC), UK. SIO has purchased
six instruments: four 300kHz Workhorse Sentinels, a 1200kHz Workhorse Sentinel
with pressure sensor, and a Workhorse Multi-directional Wave Gauge.
SIO reports that
they purchased the instruments after good experiences with RDI Workhorses
in earlier projects. Two of the Sentinels will be deployed on an Environmental
Protection Agency project in the Santa Barbara Channel, off California, to
provide profiling data in support of oil spill response programs. The initial
deployment will be configured in the self-recording mode; however, in the
final program configuration, profile data will be telemetered ashore in real
time. For full details contact Harry Maxfield, RD Instruments or

Technologies - Compact Fiber Optic Multiplexer |
Dartmouth,
Nova Scotia - Focal Technologies Corp., a Kaydon company, manufacturer of
the well established line of rotary products and fiber optic multiplexers,
has recently introduced the Model 903-HD High Density Video/Data Multiplexer.
The High Density Model 903-HD remote unit provides the features of a full-sized
subsea video/data multiplexer in a package less than half the volume of
comparable devices. Such size reduction enables installation in very limited
spaces while supporting transmission of 4 - 8 high quality video channels
and 8 - 16 bi-directional data channels over a single optical fiber.
The Model 903-HD
supports system diagnostics as well as dual fiber operation with an automatic
fiber switching option. The Model 903-HD is highly adaptable, and easily
configured to meet specific customer requirements. For more information contact,
