Delivers First Autonomous Visualisation System |
Sonar Research
& Development of Beverley, Yorkshire has delivered its first compact,
low powered AV system to De Beers Marine for use in their new
Maridan M600 AUV.
Based on the successful
and proven Seabed Visualisation technology which is already in use throughout
the De Beers Marine offshore mining fleet, the AVS is SRDs most recent
development aimed at meeting the growing requirement for the AUV and ROV
market. The system will acquire and store full seabed visualisation data
via a configurable data storage system available to suite any mission duration,
and has a power consumption of only 40 watts, which is significantly lower
than alternative systems currently available. Synchronisation to other payloads
such as sub-bottom profiler and sidescan sonar is also available, as is forward
looking sonar for obstacle avoidance.
In addition SRD
has supplied De Beers Marine with a full post mission-processing suite to
create full 3D DTMs of the areas surveyed in the search for offshore
diamond deposits. The AVS system and the processing suite have been tailored
to meet De Beers Marine exacting requirements for their first AUV. SRD has
worked closely with De Beers Marine for many years and have developed systems
to assist with the actual mining operations as well as survey applications.

| Suriname
To Offer First Exploration Licenses |
The South American
nation of Suriname plans to hold its first ever bidding round for seven oil
exploration licenses this year, authorities said yesterday. State oil company
Staatsolie has already signed an agreement with Western Geco, a joint venture
between Schlumberger Ltd and Baker Hughes Inc, to acquire 2D seismic data
in near-shore Suriname to help potential bidders assess the blocks on
offer.
Staatsolie plans
to offer six near-shore and one onshore licenses in November this year, and
they will remain open until May 2002, Exploration and Production Contracts
Administrator Marny Daal-Vogelland told Reuters in an interview. "The survey
started on January 12 and the past 40 days Western Geco sailed up and down
in our offshore area, obtaining additional seismic data," she said. Western
Geco will process the data and, on behalf of Staatsolie, market them to potential
bidders. Visit:
