| TSS
(UK) Ltd Receives Largest Order Ever |
Perry Slingsby
Systems has placed the largest single order ever received by TSS (UK) Ltd,
part of the Vosper Thornycroft Group. The order is valued above US $1.75
million and covers the purchase of seven Dualtrack cable detection systems.
The systems will be integrated with Perry ST200 ROVs, six of which are intended
for TyCom Ltd of the USA.
All of the systems
ordered by Perry Slingsby will be delivered by December 2001 and currently
occupy a place in the TSS production schedule which contains orders for 23
cable tracking systems. Over the past 12 months TSS has delivered more than
20 cable trackers and has now been required to double the production capacity
of its factory at Witney, near Oxford, England.
TSS currently
manufactures three detection systems; the 340, 350 and Dualtrack. Target
detection by the TSS 340 is achieved by pulse induction enabling it to locate
any conductive material, exposed or buried and to output highly accurate
survey data on any type of cable or pipeline. This can range from large gas
lines down to small non-armoured communications cables and provides considerable
advantages over magnetometer based systems. The TSS 350 system is designed
specifically for the detection and survey of tone-carrying cables. It can
provide accurate survey data verifying the location and burial status of
a cable as well as providing operators with fault location, vehicle skew
angle and look-ahead information.
In addition to
cable detection systems, TSS is also acknowledged as a world leader in advanced
motion sensor technology. It is now the only manufacturer to offer a complete
range of sensors for all applications from heave measurement to high accuracy
position and orientation systems. Over 70 per cent of the company's products
are exported annually. The head office of TSS is located in Witney near Oxford,
England and it also has centres in Aberdeen and Houston plus a world-wide
network of agents. For the complete press release and press enquiries, e-mail:

Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) DGPS Service |
AMSAs
Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) Service is provided by a network
of DGPS radiobeacons that improve the accuracy and integrity of the Global
Positioning System (GPS) in critical areas of Australias coast. These
areas currently include the Great Barrier Reef, Torres Strait, Bass Strait
and selected port areas such as Adelaide, Brisbane, Sydney (which also covers
Newcastle and Port Kembla) and Karratha in the Pilbarra.
Each DGPS radiobeacon
comprises two independent GPS receivers, including specialist software to
calculate the corrections, an MSK modulator, a transmitter operating in the
LF/MF band (285 - 325 kHz), a DGPS station controller and an integrity monitor.
Critical components of the system are redundant and the DGPS radio beacons
are remotely controlled and monitored 24 hours a day. Any DGPS radiobeacon
out-of-tolerance condition is reported to users via AUSCOAST Warnings.
A network of 16
stations is expected to be completed by June of 2001. For more information
and station location information, visit the following web site address:

| C &
C Technologies Selected By NOAA For Hydrographic Mapping Project In Gulf
Of Mexico |
C & C
Technologies, Inc. of Lafayette, Louisiana, USA was selected by the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) as "the most preferred" to
perform hydrographic surveying and related support services in the Gulf of
Mexico from a field of five competing firms. This five-year, $4 million per-year,
indefinite-delivery, requirements-type contract, will consist of acquiring
shallow water multibeam sounding data, side scan sonar data, tidal tabulation,
computation of tidal datums, tidal zoning, and the determination of least
depths on hazards to navigation.
All work will be
performed to NOAA specifications and the data provided, including reports
and Smooth Sheets, will be in NOAA specified formats for archival and subsequent
application to the United States' nautical charts and associated nautical

Major Orders For China's Rivers And Seas |
As part of
a major program of river pollution monitoring, the Environment Protection
Administration of the People's Republic of China has ordered a number of
acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCPs) from RD Instruments Inc, USA.
The ADCPs will be deployed in rivers throughout China to measure flow rates
and direction. The information obtained will not only aid in identifying
sources and rates of pollution but will also contribute to flood prevention
and control measures.
The instruments
sold to the Environment Protection Agency are RDI's Workhorse Rio Grande
instruments. These have "revolutionised hydrology" (Dr Alain Laraque, IRD,
France) by providing faster, more accurate and safer methods of measuring
river discharge and surveying river current structure. A boat-mounted ADCP
measures current velocities throughout the river depth and combines these
with bottom tracking to obtain discharge measurements in a tenth of the time
of those made by fixed instrumentation. River traffic is not impeded by
potentially hazardous cross-river cableways and accuracy is ±0.25 per
cent of water velocity relative to the ADCP.
RD Instruments
invented the first commercial Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) in
1981 and has grown to an $20 million company selling a range of instruments
to measure currents in ocean and coastal waters, rivers and lakes, ports
and harbors. For more information,
