Ready To Begin Laying Largest Pipe Offshore In Gulf of Mexico |
HOUSTON--(BUSINESS
WIRE)--June 29, 2001--Gulfstream Natural Gas System, L.L.C., will reach another
major milestone tomorrow when it begins laying 36-inch diameter steel pipe
offshore near the coast of Alabama. The effort is the beginning of a four-month
process that will result in 433 miles of pipe laid in the Gulf of Mexico
connecting Alabama to Florida.
"We are moving
full speed ahead. We will be laying offshore pipe with one of the most
sophisticated semi-submersible pipelay barges in the world, laying 3-4 miles
of pipe per day from July 1 through the end of October," said Nancy Schultz,
Gulfstream senior vice president and general manager of technical
functions.
Once complete,
the $1.6 billion Gulfstream system will be the largest pipeline in the Gulf
of Mexico, with capacity to transport approximately 1.1 billion cubic feet
of natural gas per day. It is also the first new natural gas transportation
system to serve Florida in more than 40 years.

a deal that was agreed on the basis that the exploration and production assets
are valued at $157 million.

| Oil
& Gas Industry Chastises Delegation On Directional Drilling |
LANSING,
Mich.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 29, 2001--Michigan oil and gas industry leaders
today denounced the U.S. House of Representatives' recent approval of a bill
that would ban any additional exploration for crude oil and natural gas under
the Great Lakes.
" The result of
this vote is very disappointing to the oil and gas industry and should be
very disturbing to every Michigan resident who relies on petroleum products
to power their vehicles and heat their homes and offices," said Frank L.
Mortl, president of the Michigan Oil and Gas Association (MOGA). "The bill's
supporters clearly let political propaganda get in the way of what is truly
best for the residents of the Great Lakes states and the nation as a
whole."
The U.S. House
of Representatives approved an amendment Thursday, June 28 to essentially
block oil and gas companies from developing new directionally drilled holes
beneath the Great Lakes to tap into, or search for, new natural resources.
Only three Michigan Congressman opposed the amendment -- Joe Knollenberg
(R-Bloomfield Hills), Mike Rogers (R-Brighton) and Nick Smith (R-St.
Joseph).
"Drilling directionally
or horizontally ... provides a very precise and safe way of exploring for
and developing any potential reserves under the lakes from the safety of
isolated on-shore positions," said Dr. Robb Gillespie, an assistant director
of the Michigan Basin Core Research Laboratory and professor of geology at
Western Michigan University.
"The bottom line
is that there is overwhelming scientific evidence that proves directional
drilling is safe and that the practice poses no reasonable risk to the lake
water or the lakeshore's natural environment," said Mike Miller, chairman
of MOGA. "In fact, there are thousands of land-based directionally drilled
holes across Michigan that are specifically used to protect fragile natural
habitats -- including the highly prized Pigeon River Forest -- that sit above
important natural resources."
There are currently
seven directionally drilled wells owned by Michigan oil and gas companies
operating under Lake Michigan and Lake Huron -- one well producing crude
oil, six producing natural gas -- all of which have operated with no significant
environmental problems.
"Many of the bill's
supporters have said that there is not enough oil or natural gas beneath
the Great Lakes to warrant directional drilling, that is simply not true,"
Miller said. "The six directionally-drilled natural gas wells that are owned
and operated by Michigan oil and gas companies produce enough gas each year
to heat 18,000 homes. Not allowing companies to develop crucial oil and natural
gas reserves beneath the Great Lakes could severely cripple Michigan's capability
to provide basic necessities like heat and power."
"I am stunned at
the representatives who voted 'yes' to the amendment because they have made
politics more important than scientific evidence and the historically safe
practice of directional drilling," Mortl said. "They have blatantly ignored
every credible scientist and study on directional drilling and crowned themselves
the experts of the topic, apparently without ever so much as visiting one
of the successfully directionally drilled wells. This is the political equivalent
of going to a doctor only to ignore the doctor's medical advice."

| The
Search Is On For WWII Sub Detection Networks |
Prior to the
outbreak of WWII the Japanese began construction of several different types
of midget submarines. Recognizing the strategic importance of such a weapon
for combat use, Japan built hundreds of these "mini subs" ranging in size
from just under 80 feet to over 100 feet.
Designed to carry
a crew of 2 to 3 sailors and armed with two torpedoes, these small subs were
originally intended to be transported on ships and deployed in the path of
an enemy fleet. However, very quickly the Japanese saw the advantages of
using the mini subs for special operations inside enemy harbors where
conventional submarines could not go. To enhance their stealth capability,
the midget subs were modified to ride atop full size subs and be deployed
at sea near the target location. Their compact size and shallow draft allowed
them to easily penetrate coastal areas and harbors, and wreak severe damage.
Mini subs were involved in the attack on Pearl Harbor, and in raids on Sydney,
Australia and Diego Suarez in the Indian Ocean. In 1942/43 the boats were
deployed off Guadalcanal where they achieved modest success against US shipping.
By the mid 1940's the mini subs were a scourge feared by allied forces.

Offshore And Bouygues Offshore Announce Successful Installation Of First
Girassol Riser Tower |
LONDON--(BUSINESS
WIRE)--June 27, 2001--AMG, the Alto Mar Girassol Joint Venture, which comprises
partners Stolt Offshore S.A. (Nasdaq: SOSA: Oslo Stock Exchange: STO) and
Bouygues Offshore (NYSE:BWG - PARIS: BOS.PA), today announced that it has
successfully completed the installation of the first Riser Tower on the Girassol
field.
This important
milestone has been achieved within the framework of the turnkey contract
awarded by TotalFinaElf. The installation operation represented a major
technological challenge and is a world first in the development of deepwater
hydrocarbon fields. Four ships from the Stolt Offshore fleet contributed
to the transport and installation operation.
The Riser Tower,
a 1,300 metre-long bundle, was transported from the SONAMET fabrication yard
in Lobito (a joint company between Stolt Offshore and SONANGOL) to the location
by sub-surface tow. In a controlled operation, the bottom of the tower was
lowered to the sea floor bringing the tower to a vertical position. It was
then secured to its anchored base. Two further riser towers will be installed
on the Girassol field in the near future.
When the Girassol
FPSO, the world's largest floating production storage and offloading unit
arrives on site in July it will be linked by flexible flowlines, supplied
by NKT Flexibles, to the top of the riser towers. The FPSO was built by the
Stolt Offshore and Bouygues Offshore Mar Profundo Girassol (MPG) joint venture
in South Korea. The Girassol field, located offshore Angola in Block 17,
is operated by TotalFinaElf under a Production Sharing Agreement with SONANGOL.
TotalFinaElf (40%) is in partnership with Exxon Mobil (20%), BP Amoco (16.67%,
Statoil (13.33%) and Norsk Hydro (10%).
Stolt Offshore
is a leading offshore contractor to the oil and gas industry, specialising
in technologically sophisticated offshore and subsea engineering, flowline
and pipeline lay, construction, inspection and maintenance services. The
Company operates in Europe, the Middle East, West Africa, Asia Pacific, and
the Americas.

Litigation Reform Act of 1995. Actual future results and trends could differ
materially from those set forth in such statements due to various factors.

Geotechnical TDR/OTDR Displacement Magnifying Monitoring Cable |
Zostrich
Geotechnical Monitoring has developed, and is in the initial stages of marketing,
specially equipped fiber optic and coaxial cable for TDR and OTDR geotechnical
displacement monitoring.
Patented displacement
magnifying anchors are locked on to the monitoring cable at discrete intervals.
This prevents cable motion in the section encapsulated by the anchor,
transferring all dislocation to the unencapsulated cable section between
anchors. Moments developed by rotation of the anchor in the drillhole also
act to enhance cable dislocation induced by ground displacement. the result
is a cable more likely to detect distributed ground motion.
With their remote
read, real time capabilities, TDR and OTDR systems are ideal detection and
early warning systems for any ground displacement needs.
Recognizing the
need for a complete TDR solution, Zostrich Geotechnical specializes in custom
fabrication of TDR and OTDR cables and geotechnical monitoring systems. this
inclludes cable selection, system development, system sales and remote monitoring
services. Download

Makes Small Discovery On Danish Shelf |
OilOnline--
Monday, July 02, 2001: Statoil made a small oil discovery near the Siri field
on the Danish continental shelf.
The operator said
the drilling operation using the jackup Noble George Sauvageau was carried
out at record speed in less than 10 days, making it Statoil's fastest exploration
drilling resulting in a discovery. The find, called Stine Segment II, lies
about 4.3 miles east of the Statoil-operated Siri field in 197 feet of water.
The well was drilled almost vertically down to 6,860 feet where oil was
encountered in Palaeocene sandstone. The purpose of the well was to prove
oil reserves for production using the Siri platform, which has a production
capacity of 50,000 b/d of oil. Siri's current production is around 30,000
b/d of crude. The jackup has now moved to the Siri platform where it will
drill a 23,623 foot horizontal well to the new oil find. Production is expected
to start in September.
