To Help Honor Veterans At Naval War College Midway Day Commemorations
|
"Beginning
June 4th 2000, the 58th anniversary of the Battle of Midway, we will inaugurate
activities commemorating one of the most decisive sea battles in world history.
Midway was won, not by superior numbers or daunting technology, but by the
courage and tenacity of sailors who fought a vicious air and sea battle against
overwhelming odds. Their victory helped us win the world we have today, and
it is appropriate that we remember it and those who participated in
it."
Chief of Naval
Operations Admiral Jay Johnson's stirring words were the inspiration for
the Navy's third Midway Day commemoration at the U.S. Naval War College in
Newport, Rhode Island. The June celebration was the largest ever, with 850
people attending an evening that featured an educational program, a historical
remembrance and a dinner/dance. Among those attending were a number of decorated
WWII veterans, including four veterans of Midway. Nauticos was pleased and
honored to be a part of the event, as David Jourdan was the keynote speaker.
He described the ocean search expedition conducted by Nauticos and the Naval
Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO) in 1999, aired last December on The Discovery
Channel. Following Dave's talk was a special presentation to Professor Michael
Handel. A flag that had been flown from the USS Missouri, Midway Island,
and U.S. Naval War College was presented as a tribute to his long career.
History of the
Battle of Midway History of the Battle of Midway Japan's powerful navy had
fought victorious battles at Pearl Harbor and Coral Sea and was looking eastward.
Only a small U.S. Navy outpost on Midway Island lay between Japan and Hawaii.
Japanese strategists designed an elaborate plan to lure American forces into
the open where they could be destroyed. However, American code breakers
deciphered enough of the Japanese signals to learn of the attack. An American
trap was set, as U.S. Navy carriers steamed in position for a first strike.
Just after Japanese planes took off at dawn to attack Midway Island, American
planes launched at maximum range to strike the Japanese
carriers.../continued...

| States
Receive Record $656M From Federal Mineral Reserves |
A record amount
of mineral revenues---$656 million---went to states for their share of revenues
collected from oil, gas, and other mineral development in federal lands inside
their boundaries or in federal waters adjacent to their shores.
"If the current
price and production trends continue, this will be an all-time record year.
Managing our nation's energy and mineral resources is particularly rewarding,
knowing these resources are truly owned by every American," remarked Secretary
of the Interior Gale Norton. "We are extremely pleased that this revenue
is shared with the states where production occurs. The money goes directly
to the state treasuries where they have full control over how it is used.
Many states earmark these federal mineral revenues for important programs
such as education and public works. Sharing money with the states is an excellent
example of good government," said Norton.
The amount represents
a cumulative share for January through June 2001. This year's six-month amount
surpasses last year's by $294 million. The total distributions for 2000 set
a record at $800 million for the entire year. The money is collected and
distributed by the Minerals Management Service.
The money represents
the states' portion of revenues collected from mineral resources that are
produced on federal lands within their borders and from certain oil and natural
gas tracts in federal waters adjacent to their shores. States and the federal
government share the mineral revenues from federal lands: 50 percent goes
to the state, 40 percent to the Reclamation Fund for water projects and 10
percent to the U.S. Treasury. One exception, Alaska, gets a 90-percent share,
as prescribed by the Alaska Statehood Act. Oil, natural gas and coal production
make up the majority of the revenues.
Certain coastal
states with federal offshore tracts that are adjacent to their seaward boundaries
receive 27 percent of those mineral royalties as well. Remaining offshore
revenues are deposited in special accounts of the U.S. Treasury, including
the General Fund, the Land and Water Conservation Fund and the Historic
Preservation Fund.
MMS is the federal
agency in the U.S. Department of the Interior that manages the nation's oil,
natural gas and other mineral resources on the outer continental shelf in
federal offshore waters. The agency also collects, accounts for and disburses
mineral revenues from federal and Indian leases. These revenues totaled nearly
$8 billion last year and more than $110 billion since the agency was created
in 1982. Annually, nearly $1 billion from those revenues go to the Land and
Water Conservation Fund for the acquisition and development of state and
federal park and recreation lands.

Real
Time 3D Bathymetry And Sidescan For The "Janus" -
A COMEX/Triton Elics International (TEI) Joint Project |
COMEX S.A.'s
new research vessel, the "Janus", will be equipped with a Triton Elics
International sidescan/bathymetry acquisition system interfaced to a Reson
8101 multibeam sonar and to a Klein 2000 sidescan sonar.
In order to maximize
the effectiveness of this equipment, COMEX has commissioned TEI to develop
new tools for real-time analysis of an object or contact detected on the
bottom. The joint project between COMEX and TEI covers the development of:
3D real-time display of multibeam data (depth and amplitude); merging bathymetry
and sidescan data and 3D display; interactive 3D display of a morphed and
geo-referenced object in TEI Delph Map.
The system selected
by COMEX based on the TEI workstation, will be Europe's most advanced, featuring
dual Pentium III 1 Ghz processing, 1GB RAM, a 73 GB hard drive and quad flat
screen monitors. The "Janus" was launched May 15 and is currently being fitted
with a hydrographic survey suite. Triton Elics International develops integrated

| GSE
Rentals Purchase GeoAcoustics 250kHz GeoSwath System |
GSE Rentals
of Aberdeen Scotland have completed the purchase of a GeoAcoustics 250kHz
GeoSwath wide beam swath bathymetry system. The system has been added to
GSE's comprehensive inventory of equipment available for rental following
extensive trials and after GSE identified it as the ideal tool for shallow
to mid depth bathymetry projects. GeoSwath is a PC based system offering
state of the art performance at low cost. Design emphasis has been placed
on minimising overall cost to the user, not only in terms of initial purchase
price, but also in terms of ease of deployment, ease of use, reducing survey
time, and "time to chart".
The 250kHz GeoSwath
can produce an accurate digital terrain map (DTM) of a survey area or route
in water depths up to 100 metres and offers wide swath coverage of up to
12 times water depth, to a maximum swath width of 300 metres. When used in
conjunction with high quality motion and heading sensors (also available
from GSE ) the system accuracy exceeds the International Hydrographic
Organisation specifications, as set out in IHO Standards for Hydrographic
Surveys, Special Publication 44, 4th Edition, April 1998.
As a leading equipment
rental company GSE needed a system that is easily portable and can be deployed
using an over-side mount or over-bow mount on vessels of opportunity. The
addition of the GeoSwath enables GSE to provide Swathe Bathymetry systems
suitable for projects ranging from near shore to 2000M water depths. The
system provides a fully integrated solution as data acquisition, real time
processing, post processing, and chart generation can all be accomplished
on the same GeoSwath unit. A feature of GeoSwath, which is of particular
benefit to users, is that it allows the majority of data processing tasks
to occur in parallel with acquisition. This low 'time to chart' feature means
that on most surveys draft charts are available within a short time of completion
of the survey, before leaving the survey area. This allows users to fill
in any gaps in survey coverage without having to meet expensive re-mobilisation
costs.

system from GSE contact Alan Cameron Tel: +44-1224-771247 Fax +44-1224-723116

| Devon
Energy To Buy Mitchell Energy & Development Corp. |
The Woodlands
Texas (AP)-- Devon Energy Corp. is buying Mitchell Energy & Development
Corp. in a cash and stock deal worth $3.1 billion that would make Devon the
second largest independent natural gas producer in the United States.
Under the agreement
announced Tuesday, Oklahoma City-based Devon will also assume about $400
million in debt and other obligations of Mitchell, which has its headquarters
in The Woodlands, a Houston suburb. Each company's board of directors has
unanimously approved the merger, the companies said Tuesday. The deal is
still subject to approval by the shareholders of both companies as well as
other customary closing conditions.
The transaction
would join two oil and natural-gas exploration companies still led by the
families that founded the businesses decades ago. It would also continue
Devon's acquisition push that has more than doubled its size over a few years.
The purchase price was vindication for Mitchell, which tried to sell itself
in early 2000. Mitchell hired Goldman Sachs to find buyers, but it balked
when the top bid was about $30 per share. The Devon deal will give Mitchell
shareholders more than that in cash, plus Devon stock. Mitchell shareholders
would receive $31 cash and 0.585 of a share of Devon common stock for each
share, valuing Mitchell at $59.40 per share.
Devon will pay
$1.6 billion and issue 30.2 million shares to Mitchell's shareholders, totaling
$3.1 billion, based on Devon's closing stock price Monday of $50.26 on the
American Stock Exchange. For more details, visit the Devon Energy web site
