Begins Construction Of Largest Deepwater Development Offshore West
Africa |
IRVING,
Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 24, 2001--Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM)
announced today that its subsidiary, Esso Exploration Angola (Block 15) Limited
(Esso), has started construction of the largest deepwater development offshore
West Africa.
The $3 billion
world-class Kizomba A project in Angola's Block 15 has recoverable resources
of approximately one billion barrels of oil and target production of 250,000
barrels per day. Kizomba A will develop the Hungo and Chocalho discoveries
in water depths of 3,300-4,200 feet. The project will include the combination
of a surface wellhead platform and subsea wells tied back to what will be
the world's largest Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading (FPSO) vessel.
The FPSO will have 2.2 million-barrel storage capacity. First oil is scheduled
for late 2004.
Commenting on the
announcement, Morris Foster, President, ExxonMobil Development Company, said,
"The start of construction activities for Kizomba A represents an important
milestone for Esso in West Africa. This and other developments being planned
for Block 15 will provide significant additions to our liquids production
in the coming years and highlights the growing importance of Angola to global
energy supplies. As an industry leader in deepwater development, ExxonMobil
will use its worldwide experience and leading edge technological capabilities
to develop Kizomba in a safe, environmentally sound and cost effective
manner."
ExxonMobil has
a leading position in nearly all the major exploration and production areas
in the world. The company is also a leading holder of deepwater acreage in
the world's most attractive deepwater regions, including West Africa where
it has interests in 19 blocks totaling 18 million gross acres. In Angola,
Esso holds interests in nine offshore deepwater blocks covering 11 million
gross acres with a recoverable resource potential of more than 7.5 billion
oil-equivalent barrels from its 22 announced discoveries. Block 15's recoverable
resource potential is in excess of 3.5 billion oil-equivalent barrels and
development planning is underway for additional similar sized projects to
Kizomba A.
In addition to
Esso (Operator, 40 percent), other participants in Block 15 are BP Exploration

| Western
Gulf Of Mexico Lease Sale 180 Attracts $165.5 Million In High Bids |
| An oil and
natural gas lease sale in Federal waters in the Western Gulf of Mexico received
$165,571,777 in high bids. The U.S. Department of the Interior's Minerals
Management Service received 386 bids totaling $189,971,325 at the sale held
in New Orleans today. Fifty participating companies bid on 320 tracts in
the Western Gulf of Mexico, offshore Texas, and in deeper waters offshore
Louisiana. There were no bids submitted on 53 tracts offered in Central Gulf
of Mexico Lease Sale 178, Part 2.
Acting MMS Director
Tom Kitsos said, "Sale 180 was clearly a success with the number of tracts
bid on ranking fourth in the last 10 years for a Western Gulf sale. This
sale saw spirited bidding activity by the independent oil and gas companies.
The top three companies in submitting bids were independents: Kerr-McGee
(55 bids), Spinnaker (35 bids), and Amerada Hess (31 bids)." Kitsos went
on to note that, "The 200 to 800 meter water depth area in Garden Banks saw
the most competitive bidding with 8 blocks having 3 bids or more." Kitsos
also noted that, "We saw some industry interest in blocks in the area formerly
known as the Western gap, which is in extremely deep water. We also saw some
bidding that was in response to our deep gas initiative in shallow
water."
Two hundred and
sixty-one tracts in water depths of 200 meters or more received bids. The
highest bid on a tract was $8,323,200, submitted by Kerr-McGee Oil &
Gas Corporation, Amerada Hess Corporation, and Petrobras America Inc. on
Garden Banks Block 245. The high bid on a block (each approximately nine
square miles) will go through an evaluation process to ensure the public
receives fair market value before a lease is awarded.

| EPC
Labs Announces Network API Thermal Printer Technology |
EPC Labs, Inc.
(Danvers, MA) is pleased to announce its latest development in thermal printer
technology a high-speed network interface.
Implemented in
the latest series of 1086 recorders, the interface provides a simple LAN
based RJ45 connection between a host NT Workstation and one or more recorders.
In order to greatly reduce the development cycle, EPC offers a high-level
API which can be linked to user-level code. The tiny library provides an
extremely intuitive, self-documented, interface to the recorder. Advanced
spooling algorithms, multi-threaded operations, and inter-process communication
techniques are all employed within the DLL so that the host developer is
relieved of such time-consuming coding. The end result is a rich, high-level
function-set that allows integration of solid driver code in a matter of
days instead of weeks.
Topside manufacturers
will find the simplicity of the physical connection very attractive.
Operators can use a normal LAN connection to a 100-speed hub or opt
for a simple crossover cable connection between a portable and a recorder.
Either way, the API provides a simple function for querying the network and
returning a list of available recorders. Once the connection is established,
calls into the library can address individual recorders. Furthermore, the
transmission characteristics and raw speed of the Ethernet interface far
surpass standard parallel methods commonly used today.
The new software
also addresses the age-old problem a pacing a continuous printer during real-time
data acquisition. The host software can register a user-defined callback
within the library to notify it when particular events have occurred. Using
this advanced method, the developer can write highly efficient data transmission
routines that circumvent the not-so-real-time tendencies of the NT operating
system. EPC is planning on implementing the same high-level interface for
its high-speed wide-bed printer, the Model 9206. E-mail Ted Curley, Sales
& Marketing Manager at
