Petrobras & hi-tech satellites to detect oil spills
Petroleo Brasileiro SA (Petrobras, Rio de Janeiro) is looking at new ways to monitor oil spills in Guanabara Bay in Rio de Janeiro after suffering two major oil spills this year. The new monitoring system would employ buoys fitted with infrared sensors for transmitting signals to low-orbit satellites (LEOS) when they detect the presence of hydrocarbons in the sea.

GlobeCrew is a registered service where crew members register for credit card or pre-paid e-mail accounts directly with Globe Wireless. E-mails are sent from/to a centrally-located GlobeCrew Kiosk, where crew members can access their private e-mail messages.

Vessels equipped with both HF and Satellite connections have crew messages continuously transmitted using the Globe Wireless Digital HF Radio Network. This guarantees the crew's messages do not raise satellite connection time and costs.

Searchable database Petroleum/Marine Techpubs
The Offshore Engineering Information Service website sees a new enhanced 'free' search facility within the database of Petroleum and Marine Technology Publications replacing the former bibliography listing publications.

The monthly 'Petroleum and Offshore Engineering Bulletin' is open to subscribers and includes a current awareness services of additions to the database. The web service is part of EEVL (the Edinburgh Engineering Virtual Library).

The service covers oil and gas exploration and production, offshore structures and pipelines, subsea systems, offshore health and safety, marine environmental protection, underwater operations, diving and ROVs, resources of the seabed and renewable energy, petroleum economics and engineering. Deep Sea in 3D - Holographic Plankton
Scientists at the British University of Aberdeen have developed a remote-controlled holographic camera capable of deep sea operation. Once deployed over the side of a ship, the camera will aid scientists on their study of plankton - tiny organisms important to the health of Earth's oceans.
