Vessels Alongside At Oceanology International (OI) 2002
OI 2002 have already had news of a number of vessels which will be moored alongside the exhibition halls during Oceanology International. Equipment demonstrations in this stunning waterfront environment will add a new dimension to the show.

In addition to exhibitors' work boats, Marine & Robotic Engineering has confirmed the presence of a ketch rigged, cargo vessel, 'Kommandoren', built in Denmark in 1891 and Fugro GEOS will bring an accommodation vessel, 'Lord of the Glens''. ExCeL has recently announced that the luxury cruise ship 'Sunborn' will moor alongside the centre providing excellent accommodation and entertainment facilities for exhibitors and visitors alike.

To join the organisations bringing their ships alongside OI London, contact Versha Carter at versha.carter@spearhead.co.uk.

QinetiQ's recently developed MIMIR EV1 boat is designed for shallow water survey applications and operates without the need for an onboard pilot. Instructions are sent to the boat from a mobile command centre and the onboard sensing technology is able to map the seabed and surroundings using an interferometric sonar system.

Geoacoustics is bringing the 'Algier Rose', an inshore diving and survey vessel from which they will demonstrate GeoSwath, a PC based shallow water, wide swath bathymetry system offering state-of-the-art performance at low cost and capable of producing a 3D map of the dock.

Rederij Waterweg will deploy 'Coastal Explorer', a 25.20 metres survey and general services vessel. With communication, survey and navigation systems, a survey room and minimum draft of only 75 cms, she is perfectly suited for work in shallow waters.

Svitzer is bringing the 72.5 metre 'Svitzer Meridian', a fully equipped survey vessel carrying positioning systems; SSBL system; single and multibeam echo sounders; side scan sonar; profilers, seismic recording system; streamer; gun source and digital QC system.

RESON will host live demonstrations of their newest advances in ultra-high resolution, dynamically focused sonar systems and sonar data acquisition software. Demonstration "surveys" will be performed to illustrate the various features of precision seafloor mapping, data presentation and data quality control. Demonstration surveys in the local harbour area will last approximately 30 minutes and visitors can register for participation at RESON's stand no. 3/5.

PGS Goes Deep With Sonardyne Super Sub-Mini Transponders
PGS Reservoir Acquisition (Houston) recently purchased 50 Sonardyne Type 7970, 4,000 metre rated Super Sub-Mini transponders to provide final cable positions during their dragged Ocean Bottom Seismic (OBS) operations in the Gulf of Mexico.

The transponders have been given a unique 'bilingual personality' mode that increases their versatility by enabling them to be programmed with simultaneous HPR 300 and 400 identities. The transponders automatically sense the type of positioning system interrogating them and switch mode accordingly.

The transponders have been supplied with 4,000 metre rated floatation collars and are being positioned from the M/V Bergen Surveyor and the M/V Kondor Explorer using Sonardyne's high accuracy Ultra Short BaseLine (USBL) positioning system. The USBL system computes in real-time the absolute positions of the transponders on the cable from range and bearing acoustic observations.

Sonardyne International is based in Yateley, England. The company has offices in Aberdeen, Houston, Singapore, Macaé and Oslo. It is recognised as a world leader in the design and manufacture of advanced acoustic instruments and systems for accurate survey, positioning and tracking in shallow and full ocean depth operations within the offshore oil and gas industries.

An image of the M/V Bergen Surveyor is available electronically or on CD by contacting Paul Eastaugh, Sonardyne Media Services or Tel: +44-118-934 1101, Fax: +44 118-934-1137, Mobile: 00257: 07889-432014 or on the web at http://www.sonardyne.co.uk

GlobalSantaFe Offshore Drilling Company Meets Full Safety Requirements Mandated By International Maritime Organization
HOUSTON, Dec. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Houston-based GlobalSantaFe Corporation (NYSE: GSF) today announced it has become one of the first offshore drilling contractors to receive the full International Safety Management (ISM) certification for its shore-based facilities and self-propelled offshore rigs. The ISM certification is a requirement of the United Nations-led International Maritime Organization's Safety of Life at Sea regulation, soon to be mandatory for all self-propelled offshore drilling vessels operating under member-state flags. Click here for photo

The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) audited GlobalSantaFe for compliance to the code. Robert Kremek, president of ABS Americas, presented the company's first ISM Document of Compliance certificate to GlobalSantaFe executives in a ceremony held today in Houston.

"We have always been absolutely committed to the safety of our people and the marine environments where we operate," Bob Rose, GlobalSantaFe chairman, said. "The ISM certification is further evidence of our commitment. In fact, we have chosen to implement the ISM standards throughout our entire worldwide fleet of drilling rigs. This is over and above what is required."

The purpose of the ISM code is to provide an international standard for pollution prevention and the safe management of ship operations. The ISM certification requires each company operating self-propelled offshore drilling vessels more than 500 gross tons to demonstrate a safety management system that protects its offshore crews, marine environments and the vessels.

The six GlobalSantaFe drilling vessels that met the ISM code include the famed Glomar Explorer, the Glomar C.R. Luigs, the Glomar Jack Ryan, the Glomar R.F. Bauer, the Glomar Celtic Sea, and the Glomar Grand Banks. Each one of these rigs has been awarded a Safety Management Certificate.

GlobalSantaFe is a leading international offshore drilling contractor offering a full spectrum of premium equipment and drilling management services. The company's diverse and technologically advanced fleet of 59 offshore rigs includes premium and heavy-duty, harsh-environment jackups; semisubmersibles; and dynamically positioned, ultra-deepwater drillships. Additionally, the company has two rigs currently under construction and two more on order. The company also has 31 land rigs and is the world's leading provider of turnkey drilling and drilling management services.

Leica Geosystems Completes Statewide Reference Station Network For Michigan Department Of Transportation
Leica Geosystems recently completed installing a statewide Continuously Operating Reference Station (CORS) network for the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), providing GPS data to support a wide range of high-precision positioning and mapping applications.

The network includes 16 CORS stations at strategic locations around the state, and a central control and monitoring facility in Lansing. The stations automatically measure errors in the GPS satellite signals and compute error correction factors. DGPS and real-time kinematic (RTK) data are streamed in real time from the reference stations via Internet connections to the Lansing control facility, where data integrity is checked prior to being uploaded to the MDOT website for public access. The posted data is provided in the industry-standard RINEX format.

The MDOT CORS network operates automatically 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The data is freely available to users throughout the state for a wide range of surveying, mapping, geographical information system (GIS), environmental and scientific applications.

Each of the CORS stations consists of a Leica RS500 12-channel dual-frequency GPS reference station with a high precision NASA/JPL choke-ring antenna. Network control and integrity monitoring are provided by Leica's IRONet software.

The Michigan Department of Transportation is investigating the feasibility of integrating the MDOT CORS network with other state offices and organizations and is developing policies to make it easy for specific cities and counties to add reference stations to the network. The Michigan system will also be integrated with other state CORS networks under the National Spatial Reference System program.

More information is available at Leica's website (http://www.leica-geosystems.com) or the Michigan DOT CORS website (http://www.mdorcors.org).

Leica Geosystems, with worldwide headquarters in Heerbrugg, Switzerland, develops, manufactures and markets systems for surveying, mapping and position determination. The company, with 2,750 employees, has a turnover of over 600 million Swiss francs and is listed on the Swiss Exchange. It is structured in six divisions: Surveying and Engineering, GIS and Mapping, Industrial Measurement, Special Products, Consumer Products and New Businesses (Cyrax).
