University Of Plymouth Receives Institution Of Civil Engineering Surveyors (ICES) Accreditation
The Institute of Marine Studies (IMS) at the University of Plymouth, England, has been granted accreditation by the Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (ICES) for its BSc Hydrography course. The accreditation is the first of its kind from ICES and comes at a time when the Institution is focusing on improved professional development provision for specialist groups within its membership.

The accreditation reflects the IMS global reputation as a centre of excellence in the field of marine studies. Commenting on the new accreditation, ICES President Harry Glennie said: "Since its inception in 1969, ICES has dedicated itself to supporting, encouraging and regulating the professional aspirations of surveyors in civil engineering. As the nature and scope of civil engineering work has changed, we have seen an increase in the diversity of professional backgrounds amongst applicants wishing to join the Institution. New members are attracted by ICES reputation as a body combining sound regulatory procedures with an interest in specialisms for which there is no other equivalent body. The IMS is internationally renowned and it is highly appropriate that we accredit their hydrographic course as part of our growing links with specialist professions within geospatial engineering."

As one of the benefits of accreditation, IMS students on the BSc Hydrography course will enjoy free student membership of the ICES and be able to participate in the activities of the ICES Hydrographics Group, whose chairman Ed Danson has been the driving force behind the IMS accreditation. Prof David Huntley, Head of the Institute of Marine Studies added: "We are delighted that our BSc Hydrography course has received accreditation by the ICES. Career opportunities in hydrography are on the increase and this is the right time to be reinforcing links between ourselves, specialists in hydrography and ICES; a body which can add value both as a knowledge centre and in regulating professional competence following graduation."

ICES is a full member of the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) and so contributes to the international voice of the surveying profession in influencing policies, helping to set professional standards, promoting the profession and encouraging research, education and training excellence.

The Institution maintains a list of universities and accredited courses on their web site at http://www.ices.org.uk. For more details on academic course and in-company training scheme accreditation, as well as for information on membership, please contact Paul Brown, Education, Training and Membership Officer on +44 (0)161-972-3114 direct.

Further details on the University of Plymouth and the BSc Hydrography can be accessed through the University website at http://www.science.plym.ac.uk, by e.mail to scienqs@plymouth.ac.uk or by telephone +44 (0) 1752 233093

PGS Geophysical Selected To Promote Deepwater Hydrocarbon Exploration Area Offshore South Africa
HOUSTON & OSLO, Norway--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 30, 2002--Petroleum Geo-Services ASA (NYSE:PGO)(OSE:PGS) and Petroleum Agency SA announced today a joint co-operation agreement to promote deepwater exploration acreage, in an area known as the Orange Basin, situated off the West Coast of the Republic of South Africa. This area, totaling approximately 160,000 square kilometers in extent, will be the subject of future licensing to oil and gas exploration companies.

PGS will acquire and market high quality 2D seismic data in collaboration with Petroleum Agency SA. The agreement also includes the re-processing of certain existing 2D seismic data. PGS, together with the Petroleum Agency SA, will interpret the new and re-processed data to assess regional hydrocarbon prospectivity and identify areas of specific interest. This data will form the substantial part of data packages, which PGS together with Petroleum Agency SA, will use in promoting exploration opportunities in the area to the international oil industry.

The survey will commence in the first quarter 2002. Phase I consists of approximately 3,750 line kilometers of new high quality 2D seismic data. The vessel to be used is the "M/V Geo Explorer," towing a long streamer of 6,000m in length. The survey concentrates on the deepwater areas of Block 2B and the west of Blocks 5 and 6 and includes a number of longer lines that tie into wells drilled on the shelf and also to existing shallow water 2D seismic surveys.

Exploration to date in the Orange Basin has concentrated on the shelf, in water depths of less than 500m, with numerous gas/condensate discoveries and one oil discovery proving the existence of active petroleum systems. Although the potential of the deepwater is so far untested, there are clear indications that the oil prone nature of the Aptian source rock increases with distance from the shore in terms of both quality and maturity. The new 2D seismic data will allow for a more complete understanding of the hydrocarbon potential of the deepwater Orange Basin.

Petroleum Geo-Services is a technologically focused oilfield service company principally involved in two businesses: Geophysical Operations and Production Operations. PGS acquires, processes and markets 3D, time-lapse and multi-component seismic data. These data are used by oil and gas companies in the exploration for new reserves, the development of existing reservoirs, and the management of producing oil and gas fields. PGS' advanced geophysical technologies allow oil and gas companies to better characterize and monitor their reservoirs in order to enhance production and ultimate recovery of hydrocarbons. In its Production Operations business, PGS owns four floating production, storage and offloading systems ("FPSOs") and operates numerous offshore production facilities for oil and gas companies. FPSOs permit oil and gas companies to produce from offshore fields more quickly and cost effectively. PGS operates on a worldwide basis with headquarters in Oslo, Norway and Houston.

For more information, contact PGS Exploration, John Greenway, +47 67 51 40 74, or PGS Geophysical, Sverre Strandenes, +47 67 51 45 17 or visit their web site at: http://www.pgs.com. For forward looking statements and the complete source press release, click here...
