Leica Geosystems Introduces New Integrated Software For Geodetic Monitoring
Leica Geosystems today announced the introduction of GeoMoS (Geodetic Monitoring System), a powerful software package for precise deformation monitoring and analysis.

Running on Windows 2000 or NT, GeoMoS is designed to support complex multi-sensor networks for monitoring structures such as bridges, tunnels, earthen dams, mineshafts, landslide areas, volcanoes and high-rise buildings. It is the first and only software that integrates information from a wide array of sensors, including terrestrial robotic total stations, GPS receivers, meteorological sensors, strain gauges, tilt sensors, and more into a single network.

GeoMoS automatically monitors real-time movements at all remote sensor locations and advises authorities of any movements beyond pre-defined tolerances. It also provides extensive event-management and trend analysis functionality.

"Leica Geosystems has extensive experience in structure monitoring, and has deployed large sophisticated multi-sensor monitoring networks," said Matthew Smith, president of Leica Geosystems. "The GeoMoS software draws on our experience with real-world solutions to the practical problems encountered in the field."

GeoMoS is designed to make it easy to connect multiple sensors of different types to the network. Users simply describe the sensor in a standard XML text file. No additional programming is required when adding sensors. The GeoMoS software can support a variety of data communications media, including GSM, WAN, LAN, radio link or cable, using TCP/IP technology.

"Deformation monitoring and analysis present some of the most difficult challenges in the surveying industry today," said Smith. "They require the highest accuracy, maximum sensor reliability, automatic operation, built-in redundancy and highly flexible computational tools."

The scalable GeoMoS software is available in several different levels of sophistication, to match the customer's requirements and budget, ranging from simple single-sensor monitoring stations, to complex multi-station networks.

Leica Geosystems, with worldwide headquarters in Heerbrugg, Switzerland, develops, manufactures and markets systems for surveying, mapping and position determination. The company, with 2,750 employees, has a turnover of over 600 million Swiss francs and is listed on the Swiss Exchange. It is structured in six divisions: Surveying and Engineering, GIS and Mapping, Industrial Measurement, Special Products, Consumer Products and New Businesses (Cyrax). Along with the Swiss facilities, the company also has development and production subsidiaries in America and Asia and is represented by 20 sales units and more than 100 representatives worldwide.

Richard Brancker Research And Guildline Annouce Collaboration
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, Smiths Falls, Ontario, Canada-- February 7, 2002: Richard Brancker Research Ltd. (RBR) and Guildline Instruments Limited (Guildline) announce the signing of a collaborative agreement. The agreement covers product development, research, and marketing. Current collaboration efforts are in two main areas.

First, RBR is helping Guildline remodel their underwater tow vehicle, the MiniBAT. RBR's expertise in custom engineering is being put to work to increase the depth capability of the MiniBAT as well as to provide an onboard customizable instrument package, roll monitoring, a new hand control unit and a new integrated software package.

The MiniBAT will continue to have bottom avoidance, GPS and the typical array of sensors, including pH, DO, PAR, Tu, Fl, dye tracers, transmissometers, optical plankton counters and nutrient analysers. The remodelling of the MiniBAT will ensure that it is the market's best light-weight undulating tow vehicle. A prototype of the new MiniBAT (8820A) and a sample instrumentation package will be on display at Oceanology International in London March 5-8, 2002.

Second, Guildline has offered its expertise in conductivity measurement to help RBR introduce a new marine conductivity sensor. As the world's leader in salinity with their Autosal® Laboratory Salinometer and Portasal® Portable Salinometer, Guildline is well-positioned to provide RBR with the knowledge required to put together a high-accuracy conductivity sensor.

The new sensor will complement RBR's current product line to permit conductivity accuracies of 0.003 mS/cm for all applications. The new sensor and logger package (Model XR-420 CTD GIL) is projected to be a more cost-effective solution than the existing high-accuracy CTD loggers on the market.

Both RBR and Guildline both say that this collaboration is just a beginning. Joint efforts are the most efficient way to provide the instruments required. These efforts are the future of cost-effective production of instruments for world-class scientific research. The combined efforts of both RBR's and Guildline's R+D teams will forge ahead with new developments.

Guildline Instruments Limited was founded in 1957, and manufactures and markets very high precision instruments for the fields of electrical metrology and oceanography. Many of these instruments were and continue to be developed in conjunction with government research institutions such as the National Research Council of Canada (NRCC), the National Institute of Standards Technology (NIST), and the Bedford Institute of Oceanography (BIO).

Richard Brancker Research Ltd has been making precision electronic equipment for all kinds of scientific research, production testing, automation and monitoring, for over 25 years. RBR provides appropriate engineering solutions for individuals, scientists, private companies, universities and government agencies.

HYPACK 2002 A Low-Cost Opportunity To Hydrographic Surveying Training
Middlefield, CT-- Coastal Oceanographics held the ninth HYPACK training conference in January 8 through January 10, 2002 at the beautiful Marriott Riverfront Hotel in Savannah, GA minutes from the historical downtown , hosting over 350 attendees and 30 exhibitors.

In 1993, Coastal Oceanographics began the practice of holding "users conferences," which gave employers a low-cost opportunity to train employees, and allowed Coastal to get feedback on what users thought of the product. The first conference, held in Atlantic Beach, Florida, brought in 97 attendees. The number has since grown to more than 350 surveyors and more than 40 hydrographic survey companies at a recent conference. Our HYPACK conferences are getting bigger and better. Following our annual tradition, Monday before the conference, Coastal Oceanographics Inc. organized the Humper Classic Golf Tournament at the Southbridge Country Club. Despite the cold and windy weather conditions, all the golf aficionados had a great time.

On Tuesday morning Pat Sanders, President of Coastal Oceanographics Inc., welcomed everybody to our ninth HYPACK User Conference and started the training sessions of the HYPACK MAX hydrographic survey software package. The first two days of classroom training covered survey preparation, geodesy, data collection, editing, sounding selection, plotting, volumes, sections, surface modeling and import/export to CAD. The last day, our HYSWEEP multibeam survey and editing package and DREDGEPACK dredge monitoring software were covered in detail. Coastal Oceanographics personnel had the opportunity to present the latest changes in HYPACK® MAX 005.b, including the new Single Beam editor program, the ADCP module, and the new HYPLOT program.

HYPACK 2002 also allowed surveyors an opportunity to view the latest hydrographic equipment. Thirty exhibitors from software/hardware manufacturers, equipment resellers and service providers were on hand in the exhibit hall to demonstrate their products. In addition to the exhibits, ODOM hydrographic and Kongsberg Simrad provided on the-water demonstrations of their equipment.

Coastal Oceanographics places a priority on customer service and found that our HYPACK conferences are a great way to meet our HYPACK users and get a real feedback on our software.

The COI team is already working to fine the best site for our 10th Anniversary Conference in January 2004. Plans are to go the West coast.

For those users that can not wait until then, we have 3 training scheduled for this year:
March 11-13, 2002- Burlington, Canada
March 19-21,2002- St Petersburg, Russia
April 2-5, 2002-Amsterdam, The Netherlands

For more information about our future conference, please visit Coastal Oceanographics’ website: http://www.coastalo.com or contact Lourdes Ramos at Coastal Oceanographic, Inc. at Tel: + 860-349-3800 Fax: + 860-349-1982.
