| Expanding
Frontier In Deepwater Is Focus Of New MMS Report |
|
A
new publication, Deepwater Gulf of Mexico 2002: America's
Expanding Frontier (OCS Report (MMS 2002-021), has been
released by the Minerals Management Service (MMS), Gulf
of Mexico OCS Region, Regional Director Chris Oynes announced
today at the Offshore Technology Conference in Houston.
The expanded report details the extraordinary growth of
oil and gas industry activity in the deepwater (1,000 ft
of water or more) Gulf over the past seven years and anticipates
continued growth.
A
certain level of maturity has now been reached, and the
deepwater Gulf of Mexico is an expanding frontier," said
Mr. Oynes. He points to the 51 deepwater projects on production
at the end of last year, more than triple those of four
years ago. "In fact," he adds, "a record 14 deepwater projects
began production last year, and another 13 are expected
to begin this year." Just how important this growth is can
be seen in the fact that 59 percent of all oil production
in the Gulf now comes from deepwater.
"One
of the newest and most remarkable trends," noted Oynes,
"is the trend to use subsea completions. There are now 82
subsea completions in deepwater with 30 of the 51 deepwater
projects relying solely on a subsea completion tied back
to some other facility. This is the wave of the future."
The
report examines the technology of deepwater oil and gas
exploration and production, including the state-of-the-art
floating platforms and seafloor installations. It looks
at the process and history of oil and gas leasing, including
recent mergers and the roles of smaller companies, and environmental
protection. The section devoted to reserves and production
discusses recent finds, estimates of recoverable petroleum
hydrocarbons in the deepwater Gulf, and deepwater production
from various companies.
The
report concludes by looking towards the future- the expected
continuing increases in production, anticipated new fields,
anticipated additional deepwater discoveries, the lags between
leasing and production, and the difficulties of evaluating
leases before these expire, given the shortage of offshore
deepwater rigs.
Copies
of this new report can be obtained from MMS, Gulf of Mexico
OCS Region, free of charge, either by visiting the Public
Information Office at Regional headquarters, 1201 Elmwood
Park Blvd., New Orleans, Louisiana 70123, or by telephoning
1-800-200-GULF (736-2519 local). Ask for OCS Report MMS
2002-021, Deepwater Gulf of Mexico 2002: America's Expanding
Frontier. The entire report can be found on MMS website:

MMS is the federal agency in the U.S. Department of the
Interior that manages the nation's oil, natural gas and
other mineral resources on the outer continental shelf in
federal offshore waters. The agency also collects, accounts
for and disburses mineral revenues from federal and Indian
leases. These revenues totaled nearly $10 billion in 2001
and more than $120 billion since the agency was created
in 1982. Annually, nearly $1 billion from those revenues
go into the Land and Water Conservation Fund for the acquisition
and development of state and federal park and recreation
lands. MMS's Website Address: http://www.mms.gomr.gov

| Sperry
Marine Introduces New-Generation Steering And Heading Control
Systems |
|
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- April 29, 2002 -- Sperry Marine,
a unit of Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC), has
introduced the marine industry's first network?based ship
steering and heading control system with self-tuning autopilot
technology.
The
new SteerMaster control system simplifies installation on
all types of ships to all classification society requirements,
while providing for easy future expansion and upgrades in
the field. The system's unique network architecture provides
20 percent to 25 percent cost savings in cabling and installation
compared with traditional steering systems with point-to-point
wiring.
The
heart of the system is the Navinet 4000 network, which is
based on industrial Controller Area Network (CAN) technology.
It is one of the first marine electronic systems to implement
the new U.S. National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA)
2000 data communications standard. NMEA 2000 is a bi-directional
multitransmitter, multi-receiver serial data network interface
that permits multiple devices to share data over a single
signaling channel. It was released by the NMEA in 2001.
The
network is built around a multi-purpose steering control
interface unit, which provides simple rail-mounted plug
connections to all units on the Navinet 4000 bus, as well
as interfaces with the steering gear. The sophisticated
software architecture allows simultaneous control and switchover
of multiple steering units on the network.
The
SteerMaster control system comprises two major components:
the Naviguide 4000 manual steering system and the Navipilot
4000 heading control system, with adaptive self-tuning autopilot.
Naviguide
4000 is a flexible, modular system that provides all system
components for follow-up (FU) and non-follow-up (NFU) steering
for single or dual rudders. The basic system - steering
mode selector, NFU tiller, FU hand wheel and steering alarm
display - can be expanded by linking other components to
the Navinet 4000 network. When used with Sperry Marine's
SynchroHelm technology, the Navinet 4000 synchronizes all
FU handwheels on the main bridge and bridge wings automatically.
Navipilot
4000 is a fully adaptive, self-tuning autopilot system that
makes real?time adjustments for loading dynamics and weather
conditions. The system's software performs dynamic tuning
of the autopilot during a modest series of initial maneuvers,
then automatically continues to refine the tuning throughout
the voyage in response to the ship's behavior. The system
provides manual selection of steering strategies to suit
weather and loading conditions. The auto self-tuning capability
provides fewer and smaller rudder movements for reduced
fuel consumption and less wear and tear on the steering
machinery. The flexible CAN-based design provides for easy
interface with a broad range of steering gears, and the
simplified display and control panel reduces training time.
The
Naviguide 4000 and Navipilot 4000 can be sold separately
or as part of a fully integrated SteerMaster 4000 steering
control system. They will be offered as part of Sperry Marine's
integrated bridge systems for newbuildings and retrofits.

Conference
Theme
AUV/UUV technology is no longer considered to be the domain
of academics and military strategists and is fast being
accepted as a technologically and financially viable solution
for many underwater tasks. A number of navies have significant
programmes to develop AUVs for ASW and MCM applications,
and the offshore oil and gas industry has accepted the technology
as a realistic solution to the problems of seabed survey
in both deep and shallow waters. Today, all the large offshore
survey companies, and most of the underwater engineering
contractors are involved in AUV development projects and
vehicles are now carrying out commercial surveys.
Furthermore,
the offshore industry views hybrid ROV/AUVs as a potentially
cost-effective solution for subsea intervention tasks. Presentations
will provide real data and feedback from recent routine
actual AUV operations, with the emphasis on sharing the
lessons learnt. The practical experience now being gained
will help existing and potential users to define more clearly
the operational needs that can be met through the application
of AUV/UUV technology and, furthermore, enable them to identify
future vehicle and technological concepts. New vehicle concepts
and developments in the enabling technologies will also
be presented. A full programme of speakers will be announced
in May.

| Fugro Wins Qatar Offshore Update |
Two Fugro companies in conjunction with Qatari company Petrotec are re-assessing geotechnical and metocean conditions on Qatar Petroleum's Maydan Mahzam and Bul Hanine offshore fields in the Arabian Gulf.
Two
Fugro companies in conjunction with Qatari company Petrotec
are re-assessing geotechnical and metocean conditions on
Qatar Petroleum's Maydan Mahzam and Bul Hanine offshore
fields in the Arabian Gulf.
Fugro GEOS is carrying out the metocean work, building on
its design criteria re-assessment of the two fields last
year. The work comprises a year-long meteorological and
oceanographic survey and a desk study to evaluate available
data. The measurement survey includes the installation of
an automatic meteorological station, tide gauge and wave
radar on a platform in the Bul Hanine field. Fugro GEOS'
Weather Monitor system displays and logs these data. Water
currents are recorded by Doppler and conventional meters
moored close to the platform. Local logistical support is
provided by Petrotec (Petroleum Technology Company WWL).
The
desk study will derive updated estimates of the engineering
design values for wind speed, wave height, surge level and
currents for the fields from these new and existing measurements.
Fugro Limited will carry out the geotechnical re-assessment
of 13 platforms in the fields, using methods similar to
those used before for platforms in the Arabian Gulf.
Data
for the re-assessment will come from Qatar Petroleum as
well as from Fugro's own database. The re-assessment will
apply present design practice for deep foundations in calcareous
soils to re-evaluate the pile capacity at each platform.
As part of the reassessment, the soil resistance at time
of driving (SRD) is being calculated from pile driving records
and hammer instrumentation data collected by Fugro during
the original installation. in providing comprehensive earth
and environmental science services throughout
