| Cal
Dive's Q4000 Reduces Costs On Its First Project |
|
HOUSTON,
May 7, 2002 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- The Q4000,
the semi-submersible multi-service vessel that Cal Dive
International, Inc. (Nasdaq: CDIS) built to reduce the cost
of deepwater construction and well intervention, has successfully
completed her first assignment on a Gulf of Mexico field
development in 3,725 fsw.
Mariner
Energy contracted Cal Dive to complete the installation
of two rigid steel jumpers, including one subsea wet gas
meter and electrical flying leads, for the King Kong / Yosemite
subsea field development in Green Canyon blocks 472 and
516. Mariner and Agip Petroleum, the U.S. upstream subsidiary
of Eni, SpA, each hold a 50% interest in the fields.
Canyon
Offshore, a Cal Dive subsidiary, performed the remotely
operated vehicle (ROV) tasks for the project. Canyon used
a 150-hp Venom ROV, capable of working in water depths to
10,000 fsw, and a Triton XL, which operates to 6,500 fsw.
The project was completed on schedule.
Dave
Huber, Senior Vice President of Operations for Mariner Energy,
said, "Mariner and Agip never questioned the technical ability
of the Q4000 to perform the work. However, we were surprised
at the efficiency of the contracting process and the bottom-line,
overall cost-effectiveness of the vessel for even a small
operation such as this. We were pleased with the performance.
The crew and the whole management process worked very smoothly."
"Although
the project for Mariner barely scratched the surface of
the Q4000's capabilities, we're pleased that the vessel
got off to a great start," said Wayne J. Bywater, Vice President
of Deepwater Business Development. (A high-resolution photo
of the Q4000 is available at: (http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20020409/DATU045)
The

| Nauticos
Makes Progress on Amelia Earhart Search ~ Two-Thirds of the
Search Area Completed |
|
In
March and April, a team of ocean explorers from Nauticos
Corporation conducted a deep sea search for Amelia Earhart¹s
lost Lockheed Electra.
The
team sailed aboard the R/V Davidson and was supported with
equipment and in-kind services from a number of organizations,
including the U.S. Navy (through a cooperative research
agreement with the Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command),
Rockwell-Collins, Konsberg-Simrad, and James Cameron - Earthship
Productions.
The
$1.7 million expedition was funded largely by Nauticos,
with significant support from private investors. The expedition
was led by Elgen Long, famed aviator and Earhart researcher,
author (with his wife Marie) of Amelia Earhart: The Mystery
Solved. Operations were managed by Nauticos executive vice
president Tom Dettweiler, veteran of numerous deep ocean
discoveries, including the Titanic, the Japanese submarine
I-52, and the Israeli submarine Dakar.
A
search area was developed using Nauticos proprietary RENAV
to analyze the wealth of data collected by the Longs and
others. The search was conducted with a deep-sea sonar system
developed by Nauticos called NOMAD, which was towed near
the bottom of the Pacific Ocean at the end of a 10,000 meter
(33,000 feet) steel-armored, fiber-optic cable. The expedition
was to have lasted 60 days, with 40 days search time to
cover at least 600-square nautical miles. However, six weeks
into the mission, after 27 days of survey, the cable winch
hydraulic system failed, ending operations. The NOMAD sonar
system performed flawlessly, covering 630-square nautical
miles of ocean bottom at a depth of 18,000 feet at better
than one meter resolution. During one deployment, NOMAD
was at depth for a record 257 hours, nearly eleven days
of continuous operation. NOMAD remains fully capable of
deep ocean operations.
We
accomplished a tremendous amount, having covered two-thirds
of our search and gaining great experience operating in
this area. We have begun winch repairs and plan to return
to the site near Howland Island in the near future to complete
the search, said David Jourdan, Nauticos president. Founded
by Jourdan in 1986, Nauticos conducts deep-ocean exploration
and recovery missions for the U.S. Navy, and provides engineering
and technical support to government, industry and scientific
organizations. The company also endeavors to find, preserve
and protect underwater cultural heritage for future generations.
The company is headquartered in Hanover, Maryland.

Announces Drilling Results in Angola |
BARTLESVILLE,
Okla., May 10, 2002 --- Phillips Petroleum Company [NYSE:P]
today announced that initial results show the first exploratory
well drilled in block 34, offshore Angola, to be a dry hole.
In
view of this information, received from operator Sonangol
P&P in early May, Phillips has re-assessed the fair value
of the remainder of the block and determined that the company's
investment in the block needs to be impaired by $77 million,
both before- and after-tax.
Because
the company has not yet issued its first-quarter financial
statements in a filing with the Securities and Exchange
Commission, accounting rules require that the company include
the impairment in its first-quarter financial results. As
the well results were not known until early May, the company's
preliminary first-quarter results announced on April 26
did not include this impairment. The impairment increased
the company's net loss for the first quarter to $102 million,
or $.27 per share. The company's net operating loss of $7
million, or $.02 per share, is unchanged. Phillips' $5 million
share of the costs of drilling the exploratory well will
be charged to dry hole expense in the second quarter of
2002.
Further
technical analysis of the results from this first well is
continuing. The company and its co-venturers have commitments
to perform further seismic analysis and drill two more exploratory
wells on block 34. While the initial exploratory well was
dry, block 34 is a large block and is believed to have potential
for exploratory success.

Recognized For 'Rigs to Reefs' Program |
The
Minerals Management Service recently received a special citation
for their part in a "rigs-to-reef" effort at the annual Offshore
Technology Conference (OTC), in Houston. The multi-agency
project turns unused offshore rigs into permanent artificial
reefs.
In
accepting the citation at the conference awards luncheon,
MMS Director, Johnnie Burton stressed the importance of
the effort. "We are proud to be a part of the Rigs-to-Reef
program," she said. "Rigs provide an important habitat for
marine life. This program ensures those habitats are preserved
long after the rigs stop production."
The agency has worked with fisherman, scuba divers, coastal
communities and offshore industry to address their concerns
about the impact of oil and gas structures on the marine
environment. After much research and assessment, MMS adopted
a national Rigs-to- Reefs policy that encourages the reuse
of oil and gas structures for offshore artificial reef developments.
Also
recognized at the event were the Texas Parks and Wildlife
Commission and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and
Fisheries for their leadership in the program.
The reefs serve as havens for marine life and as destinations
for thousands of divers and fishermen, creating a "positive
impact on the environment in the Gulf of Mexico," said Charlie
Richards, this year's OTC chairman.
MMS
travels annually to OTC to conduct workshops on deepwater
drilling and oceanography. OTC is the world's foremost event
for the offshore oil and gas industry. The conference brings
together national and international experts from around
the world to showcase the latest technologies for development
of offshore mineral resources.
MMS
is the federal agency in the U.S. Department of the Interior
that manages the nation's oil, natural gas and other mineral
resources on the outer continental shelf in federal offshore
waters. The agency also collects, accounts for and disburses
mineral revenues from federal and Indian leases. These revenues
totaled nearly $10 billion in 2001 and more than $120 billion
since the agency was created in 1982. Annually, nearly $1
billion from those revenues go into the Land and Water Conservation
Fund for the acquisition and development of state and federal
park and recreation lands. Visit MMS's Website at http://www.mms.gov

Dive Wing Makes A Splash |
Just over a year ago JW Fishers introduced their new DDW-1
deep dive wing. The wing is designed to be attached to any
towed underwater instrument and make it dive deeper using
less cable.
Ideally suited for use with side scan sonars, magnetometers,
and underwater cameras it has gained wide acceptance in
the underwater search and survey industry. Since it’s inception
the DDW-1 has become enormously popular with a variety of
different users.
A
Florida marine services company, Resolve Marine, is using
their deep dive wing with a magnetometer and towed underwater
camera system to locate WWII submarine detection cables.
Researchers at the University of Alaska have attached an
underwater camera to their DDW-1 to perform foraging studies
on several whale species. University spokesperson Briana
Witteveen says, "One application for the system is
to help determine prey types”. The Chevron oil company is
using their wing with a Proton 4 mag to locate and track
pipelines in Nigerian waters before drilling new wells.
A dive shop owner in Holland, Michigan searches for shipwrecks
and other objects lost in the great lakes with his side
scan sonar and deep dive wing. A group of Florida treasure
hunters bought a wing to use with several of their towed
instrument packages including underwater metal detectors.
Connecticut based Counterpoint Marine has their DDW-1 attached
to a boat-towed metal detector to assist in searching for
anchors, moorings, pipelines, and a variety of other targets.
The Department of Fire Services in Hong Kong uses a side
scan sonar and deep dive wing for search and rescue operations."
"The wing helps us get the sonar down deep, beyond
the range "we can search with our divers", says
the department’s Terry Tsui.
The
compact size and 45 pound weight of the DDW-1 make it easy
to deploy from any size search vessel. The wing’s high weight
to pull ratio creates a significant downward force which
maximizes the depth of the towed instrument using a minimal
amount of cable. Best of all is the deep dive wing’s PVC
and stainless steel construction that make it impervious
to salt water and corrosion.
