PIONEER 13: 57HP ROV 1500m, 300lbs

Veritas DGC Purchases Sonardyne System For New Vessel

Leading seismic survey company Veritas DGC has taken delivery of a SIPS 2 (Seismic Integrated Streamer Positioning System) from Sonardyne International Ltd for use aboard its new vessel the Veritas Vantage. The purchase follows a long programme of trials in the North Sea and the Gulf of Mexico during which the Sonardyne acoustic system was subjected to a detailed technical appraisal. The Veritas Vantage is the 14th SIPS 2 equipped vessel to enter service and significantly, is the first time that Veritas has chosen to install a Sonardyne acoustic system.

Veritas Vantage is the third Viking class ship to be built for Veritas DGC and is said to represent the leading edge of seismic survey technology. The vessel was built at the Mjellem & Karlsen shipyard in Bergen, Norway, and was officially launched on April 19th. Once the Veritas Vantage is operational, the Sonardyne SIPS 2 system will be used to provide continuous, real-time positioning along the length of the streamers to ensure the accurate position of survey data collected.

SIPS 2 has been developed to operate in the more demanding acoustic environment encountered with the latest class of large seismic vessels. The SIPS 2 equipment supplied to Veritas DGC includes an onboard control system, 56 XSRS (Cross Streamer Ranging System) transceivers, used to acoustically position the streamers, and six HGPS (Head and Gun Positioning System) transceivers. An additional factor that makes SIPS 2 attractive to users such as Veritas is that it is capable of being expanded to accommodate more streamers and offer full acoustic bracing down the entire length of the streamers. This is combined with the high level of technical support provided by Sonardyne which is designed to ensure that the user gains maximum benefit from their SIPS 2 system.

The SIPS 2 system uses a digitally encoded signal to measure the one way ranges between the transceivers on the streamers. This enables many more ranges to be measured in a shot point than conventional analogue systems and can provide positioning for up to 20 streamers if desired. The system also incorporates a number of signal modulation modes, including conventional tone burst, to penetrate the harsh acoustic environment caused by the seismic sources.

The digital modulation of the fixed frequency carriers produces a (spread spectrum) signal that enables it to operate in noisier environments. This also increases the battery life of the transceivers by reducing the amount of transmission power needed to ensure signal detection. The transceivers supplied to Veritas DGC will have a typical operational life of seven months.

The SIPS 2 acquisition software has been developed using C++ and operates under Windows™ 2000/NT. This enables the use of industrial PC technology with sufficient processing power and communication ports to control the system. The advantages of using a Windows™ 2000/NT operating system include the familiarity of a Windows™ user interface and enables different jobs to be rapidly configured.

Sonardyne International is based in Yateley, England. The company has offices in Aberdeen, Houston, Singapore, Brazil and Norway. It is recognised as a world leader in the design and manufacture of advanced acoustic instruments and systems for accurate survey, positioning and tracking in shallow and full ocean depth operations within the offshore oil and gas industries. SeaBat 8111 used to support marine habitat research
May 14, 2002 --- Dubbed a "living fossil", the coelacanths are unique fish with a history steeped in science and imagination. The coelacanth evolved 400 million years ago and lived alongside the dinosaurs. After disappearing from the fossil record 80 million years ago, scientists believed they were extinct until the discovery of a coelacanth specimen off East London, South Africa in 1938. The appearance of this "dinofish" was hailed as the greatest biological discovery of the 20th century, the equivalent of finding a live dinosaur. Current evidence suggests that coelacanths exist in small populations, produce few young, and are specifically adapted to particular marine habitats. The coelacanth is formally recognized as an endangered species.

Minerals Management Service Publishes Two New Rules In Federal Register
On May 17, the Minerals Management Service published in the Federal Register a final rule on decommissioning activities and a proposed rule on submitting exploration, development and production plans.

The final rule amends MMS regulations governing oil and gas operations in the outer continental shelf to update and consolidate decommissioning requirements (30 CFR 250, Subpart Q). The amended regulation follows the present sequence of plugging a well, decommissioning the platform and pipeline, and clearing the lease site. The updated requirements reflect the recent changes in technology. The effective date of the rule is July 16, 2002.

The proposed rule, 30 CFR 250, Subpart B, updates the requirements for submitting plans to MMS, for review and approval, before operators can begin production of oil, gas, and sulfur in the outer continental shelf. It also contains new sections on requirements for Deepwater Operations Plans and Conservation Information Documents. The comment period for the Subpart B proposed rulemaking will close on August 15, 2002.

"The proposed changes will help ensure that plans submitted to MMS for approval contain all the necessary information so that MMS can process them in a more streamlined and efficient manner," said MMS Director Johnnie Burton. "These changes will help operators continue to decommission their facilities safely and with a more efficient process."

MMS is the federal agency in the U.S. Department of the Interior that manages the nation's oil, natural gas and other mineral resources on the outer continental shelf in federal offshore waters. The agency also collects, accounts for and disburses mineral revenues from federal and Indian leases. These revenues totaled nearly $10 billion in 2001 and more than $120 billion since the agency was created in 1982. Annually, nearly $1 billion from those revenues go into the Land and Water Conservation Fund for the acquisition and development of state and federal park and recreation lands. 28th Ocean Mapping Group Multibeam Course Sydney, Australia, 13 to 18 August 2002
To meet continuing worldwide demand, the 28th Ocean Mapping Group Multibeam Course will be held at Sydney University in Sydney, Australia on 13 - 18 August, 2002. The Australian Hydrographic Service and the School of Geosciences, University of Sydney are hosting the six-day course.

Are you planning to invest in multibeam technology? Does your organisation use or receive data from a multibeam system, but it is still a "black box"? This course is designed for you. It introduces the theory and operations of multibeam surveying, provides an understanding of differences between conventional and multibeam surveys, and emphasises the realistic bounds on multibeam operations, to obtain acceptable depth data.

The course is not designed to provide fully trained multibeam system operators or data processors, but those taking the course will gain an appreciation for what is needed for further multibeam training and experience. It also provides the ideal grounding for those involved in specifying the requirements for contract multibeam surveys or the acquisition of systems.

The previous courses have been conducted in various locations including Canada, USA, Australia, Singapore, England, Denmark, Scotland, and the Netherlands. The people who have attended the courses came from a diverse group, both geographically and from the participant's background and work areas. The wide variety of experience of those attending provides an added benefit for all to share their experiences with this technology during the sessions, and at the less formal after-hours gatherings.

The participants' areas of employment cover the full range of activities from nautical charting, port and coastal surveys through to a range of work areas in the offshore mapping industry. It is interesting to note that as the offshore industry is moving into development in deeper water, so the focus of the course has been expanded to include high resolution mapping in deeper waters, where the multibeam technology was originally used. There is also an increased emphasis in multibeam applications for sea bed characterization which is of particular interest to the fisheries industry.

The topics to be covered include:

Review of underwater acoustics and overview of acoustic seabed mapping systems
Multibeam principles and multibeam calibration methods
Positioning and motion compensation for multibeam surveys
Multibeam survey planning
Data structures and multibeam data processing
Seabed acoustic backscatter and characterization
Visualization methods and quality control

The lecturers will include John Hughes Clarke and Dave Wells from the Ocean Mapping Group of the University of New Brunswick, Canada, and Larry Mayer and Christian de Moustier from the Center for Coastal & Ocean Mapping of the University of New Hampshire. These groups are acknowledged world leaders in research and development in this area, including shallow water multibeam operation, data quality, data processing and visualisation.

Course enrolment is limited to a maximum of 45 participants. The six day course fee includes all course materials and lunch each day (but excludes accommodation), and is $US2950 per participant. Participants must make their own lodging arrangements and there is a wide range of accommodation available in Sydney.

Information is available at http://www.omg.unb.ca/mbc and registration at http://www.hydrosocaasia.zipworld.com.au/

Outsourcing For Documentation/ Graphics Design/ Multimedia

Senga Consulting Services is an Outsourcing Solutions Company for Documentation / Graphics Design / Multimedia.

One of the most important information resources for your business is your documentation. After marketing collateral, your documents are the next element that customers rely on for information concerning your services and products.

Most companies have existing technical materials, promotional presentation, and other printed documents that were written by their own personnel. Chances are they have not been maintained and require some content editing for consistency and the design or layout needs a facelift.

Today's marketplace relies heavily on electronic data. Consider taking your existing documentation and converting them into an online Web or CD format. This format is not only welcomed by most clients but is an inexpensive way of reproducing your documents.

Let Senga move your documents into their next phase…your client's hands. Senga is an outsourcing solutions company that provides a full range of services from technical writing and content development to editing, desktop publishing, graphics, and multimedia design.
