| ROV Aids Environmental Groups |
|
A
coalition of environmental groups from New York and New
Jersey are using Fishers SeaOtter ROV to gather evidence
on the state of the marine environment in the area’s coastal
waters. "One of our main concerns is the use of contaminated
material to fill holes in the bottom of New York harbor
that were created by previous dredging operations", says
spokesman Frank Crescitelli. "Our other concern is the dredging
operations that remove contaminated material from the bottom.
These types of operations put contaminants back into the
water which can then spread throughout the entire marine
ecosystem."
Frank
operates the charter fishing boat, Neptune’s Champion, out
of Staten Island and is also the vice president of the Staten
Island chapter of the Coastal Conservation Association (CCA).
CCA and the Natural Resources Preservation Association (NRPA),
two lay environmental groups whose members include fisherman
and boat captains, are hoping to convince the Army Corps
of Engineers that life abounds in the "borrow pits". The
pits are underwater craters created when material was dredged
from the harbor bottom for landfill projects in years past.
Now the Corps, by order from the state, is investigating
the environmental and technical feasibility of filling in
the pits with dredged material from other areas. The environmental
groups contend the dredging and filling operations will
put contaminants back into a healthy marine environment
that is recovering nicely after years of pollution. The
position of the branch chief of environmental analysis at
the Corps of Engineers is that the pits are almost completely
devoid of oxygen and contain only minimal forms of life.
To
prove their case, the environmental groups needed to purchase
equipment that would allow them to videotape life in the
borrow pits. Money came from a grant by the Norcross Wildlife
Foundation with additional funds from CCA and two NY city
councilmen. "We looked at several underwater cameras before
deciding on Fishers SeaOtter", said Frank. "We needed a
system that could maneuver around in the pits. Simple drop
cameras wouldn’t work here. This led us to an ROV, but we
needed one powerful enough to handle the harbor currents,
something the smaller ROVs couldn’t do. The SeaOtter has
the capabilities to do all of that, and it gives a beautiful
video picture." Equipped with their high tech underwater
camera system the groups have been able to show the pits
are complete marine ecosystems teeming with life. "We were
amazed at the amount of life down there. The video showed
the ocean bottom in these pits is blanketed with mussels,
clams, and a variety of other marine creatures."

| Geotrace
Awarded Major Enhanced Imaging Contract By Talisman In UK
Sector Of The North Sea |
|
Geotrace has announced that it’s Reservoir Services Group has been awarded one of it’s largest contracts to apply its proprietary technique, High Frequency Imaging (HFI) on an approximately 3,000 square kilometer survey in the UK sector of the North Sea. The work is for Talisman Energy (UK) Limited and covers a number of blocks in Quads 14 & 15, which is one of the company’s core areas of operation.
HFI is an exclusive technique that utilizes seismic, wireline
and borehole seismic data to recover usable high frequencies
not previously thought possible. The enhanced imaging of
data provides increased resolution for structural and stratigraphic
interpretation. The techniques have helped identify new
well locations in thinly bedded reservoirs that would not
have otherwise been drilled. Some of the examples show sands
as thin as 20 feet which can be identified from the seismic
data. President, Bill Schrom stated that "We are pleased
to be working with Talisman on this major project in the
North Sea which will demonstrate the applicability of this
technique to enhance oil recovery in this relatively mature
province."
Geotrace
is a leading provider of proprietary technologies aimed
at imaging and integrated solutions used to enhance the
optimization of petroleum reservoirs. It serves the worldwide
petroleum industry.
Talisman
Energy Inc. is one of the largest independent Canadian oil
and gas producers with operations in Canada, the North Sea,
Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam and Sudan. Talisman is also
conducting exploration in Algeria (includes development),
Trinidad (includes appraisal), Colombia and the United States.
Talisman has adopted the International Code of Ethics for
Canadian Business and is committed to maintaining high standards
of excellence in corporate citizenship and social responsibility
wherever it does business. The Company's shares are listed
on The Toronto Stock Exchange in Canada and the New York
Stock Exchange in the United States under the symbol TLM.

| Fugro GEOS - Measuring Storms And Loops For Magnolia |
|
Fugro GEOS Inc, USA, has completed an investigation of storms, loop currents and other critical environmental forces at the site of Conoco's Magnolia tension leg platform development in the Gulf of Mexico.
The
development is in 4,700 feet of water in the Garden Banks
area of the Gulf and represents a world depth record for
a project of this type, which will cost $600 million and
deliver over 100 million Barrels of Oil Equivalent.
Fugro
GEOS used storm-based and operational wind and wave hindcast
data to calculate operational and extreme statistics, analyzed
by month and direction. By comparing the two data sets the
validity of the operational and storm-based data was assessed.
The study also examined the wave heights, wind and current
speeds to be expected during hurricanes.
The
Magnolia development is close to the northern edge of the
Gulf of Mexico Loop Current Eddy region of influence and
so the potential effects of these eddies were analyzed using
data sets from the Climatology and Simulation of Eddies
(CASE) project's Gulf Eddy Model (GEM). Maximum surface
current speed and direction and the number of days exposure
were determined for each eddy in the database. Extremes
and occurrence statistics for surface currents were also
estimated by using the whole data set.
Fugro
GEOS is at present providing a range of metocean consultancy
services at a number of deepwater locations in the Gulf
of Mexico. These include development of design and operational
criteria, analyses of downtime, and advice on operational
windows for weather-sensitive operations.

| 12-Pound Underwater Robot Goes On Mission With LSU To Abandoned Oil And Gas Platforms |
|
Baton Rouge, LA, June 13, 2002 -- "That little thing sure is sexy," was the comment made by one woman swimming laps in the pool at Louisiana State University while Mark Miller flew his new underwater robot through the waters. The same little ROV (remotely operated vehicle) that was used to explore inside the USS Arizona battleship is new equipment on Miller’s boat, which left Fourchon Port on May 10, 2002, for a 26-day cruise into the Gulf of Mexico and the mouth of the Mississippi.
The
VideoRay micro ROV (remotely operated vehicle) will have
an important role as it sends back live video of the underwater
world to the crew on deck and takes samples in the deep
and silty waters. Miller, a research specialist who works
for the Coastal Studies Institute of LSU, is studying the
marine life that lives and thrives on the legs of oil and
gas platforms. His blend of biology and geology has helped
the largest oil and gas companies better understand what
factors influence the environment around platforms.
Miller’s
will be studying several abandoned oil and gas platforms
and the largest artificial reef in the world to remove samples
and observe barnacles, coral, and algae. According to Miller,
scientists onboard will be gathering samples that might
lead them to cures for diseases. His second task is a holistic
survey of the natural reef shelf off of Louisiana, where
the seabed is 220 feet deep. Out of reach for divers, the
reef is host to a diversity of fish and coral. Here and
at other platforms, Miller will be mapping the area and
associating fish with the structure using sonar on the VideoRay.
He plans to collect 24 hours of deep-water video using the
VideoRay and hopes his research will help answer questions
about what attracts and sustains the marine life on the
legs.
What
makes the 8-pound robot appealing to Miller is its size
– about the dimensions of a boot box. The ROV that Miller
usually puts to work on his cruises takes six people to
operate, weighs 1000 pounds, and takes a crane to move around.
"People are eager to go on trips with me, but the first
question is always, "Is the ROV involved?" It is a lot of
work," says Miller. "With the VideoRay, people will want
to be onboard. They can play with it. Not everyone on the
boat is a diver, and the VideoRay gives him or her a chance
to see what is beneath the platform - without getting wet.
The portability of the VideoRay allows me to complete my
objectives with less manpower and smaller vessels of opportunity
that are less expensive."
The
VideoRay ROV is remotely controlled from the surface. A
tether up to 500 feet long is attached to a tiny, yellow
submersible that has a video eye. The sub gathers underwater
video through its camera eye, which is viewed on the surface
on a TV monitor. Driving the VideoRay is about as easy as
using a videogame, so a specially trained ROV pilot is not
needed. The VideoRay Pro II that Miller purchased includes
a manipulator, Desert Star positioning system, and Imagenex
851 scanning sonar, and a head mounted display. The unit,
including spare parts, personal delivery, and training was
just over $50,000. VideoRays are used throughout the world
for surveillance, security, exploration, scientific research,
recreation, and inspections of all types.

| Central Gulf Of Mexico Sale 182, Nets $355,792,253 In High Bids |
The U.S. Department of the Interior’s Minerals Management Service (MMS) announced today the completion of the two-phase bid evaluation process for Lease Sale 182. The sale was held on March 20, 2002.
Of the 506 tracts receiving bids, MMS rejected 15 high bids
totaling $5,478,221 as insufficient for fair market value.
MMS accepted the high bids on 491 tracts, but the high bidders
on two tracts decided not to accept and forfeited 1/5th
of their high bonus bids. Therefore, MMS received $355,307,255
on 489 high bids plus $484,998.20 in forfeited monies, for
a net amount of $355,792,253 in high bids.
"We
were pleased with the continued industry competition for
Gulf of Mexico leases," said MMS Regional Director
Chris Oynes. "Shallow-water bidding (water depths up
to 655 feet) was significant for this sale, with shallow-water
tracts receiving approximately 57% of the total accepted
bids. This shallow-water activity can be attributed to relatively
strong energy prices, and the MMS royalty relief provision
for 20 bcf of deep gas production (greater than 15,000 feet)
in shallow shelf waters," he continued. Sixteen percent
of the accepted bids were in deep-water ranging from 2,624
feet to 5,248 feet with a lease term of 10 years, and 15%
of the accepted bids were in ultra deep water (5,249 feet
or greater), also with a lease term of ten years.
The
highest bid accepted on a tract was $17,466,000 by Phillips
Petroleum Company for Green Canyon Block 199. The second
highest bid was for $14,857,000 by Chevron U.S.A. Inc.,
Enterprise Oil Gulf of Mexico, Inc., and PanCanadian Gulf
of Mexico, Inc., for Green Canyon Block 726. The third highest
bid was submitted by BP Exploration and Production Inc.,
for $14,251,704 for Mississippi Canyon Block 726. All top
three bids were in water depths greater than 800 meters
(2,624 feet); however, the tract that received the most
bids was in less than 200 feet of water. Eugene Island Block
159 received seven bids. This sale indicates the continued
strong showing of both major and independent oil and gas
companies participating in the Gulf.

Interior that manages the nation's oil, natural gas and
other mineral resources on the outer continental shelf in
federal offshore waters. The agency also collects, accounts
for and disburses mineral revenues from federal and Indian
leases. These revenues totaled nearly $10 billion in 2001
and more than $120 billion since the agency was created
in 1982. Annually, nearly $1 billion from those revenues
go into the Land and Water Conservation Fund for the acquisition
and development of state and federal park and recreation
lands. MMS’s Website Address: http://www.mms.gomr.gov

| Phillips' Chairman and CEO Named '2002 Petroleum Executive of the Year' |
James J. Mulva selected for honor by industry peers-- BARTLESVILLE, Okla., June 7, 2002 --- James J. Mulva, chairman and chief
executive officer of Phillips Petroleum Company [NYSE:P], has been named
the 2002 Petroleum Executive of the Year. He was nominated and selected
for the honor by his peers in the international oil and natural gas
industry.
Mulva will receive the award at a special ceremony during
the 23rd annual Oil and Money Conference, scheduled Nov.
5 in London. The conference is co-hosted by the Energy Intelligence
Group (EIG) and the International Herald Tribune.
Tom
Wallin, president of EIG, says Mulva was chosen for the
award in recognition of the aggressive steps he has taken
to grow Phillips and position it to compete long-term in
an increasingly difficult business environment. Since Mulva
became CEO in 1999, Phillips' asset base has grown from
$15 billion to one that will exceed $75 billion when the
company's merger with Conoco is completed later this year.
Phillips'
growth came through a series of strategic transactions.
Through two joint ventures, the company created the premier
midstream business in the United States and established
one of the largest chemicals companies in the world. These
were followed by two major acquisitions ? the purchase of
ARCO's Alaska business and Tosco's refining and marketing
assets.
These
transactions set the stage for Phillips' most important
move, its merger with Conoco. Expected to be completed in
the second half of the year, the merger will create ConocoPhillips,
the sixth-largest energy company in the world, based on
reserves, and the fifth-largest global refining and marketing
company.
The
selection committee for the Petroleum Executive of the Year
Award included Sir John Browne, group chief executive of
BP; Thierry Desmarest, chairman and CEO of TotalFinaElf;
Luis E. Giusti, senior advisor at the Center for Strategic
and International Studies; Vittorio Mincato, CEO of ENI;
Sir Mark Moody-Stuart, former chairman and managing director
of Royal Dutch/Shell; Masahisa Naitoh, vice chairman of
