ADCP Users Invited To Join RD Instruments On The High Seas!
(June 18, 2002 - San Diego, CA) RD Instruments is pleased to announce that its next scheduled Ocean Surveyor (OS) Training Session will be held in co-operation with Sea Education Association (SEA).

RD Instruments has arranged to host their advanced OS training session aboard SEA’s newest sailing vessel, the SSV Robert C. Seamans. The well appointed 134 foot steel brigantine is the most sophisticated oceanographic research/sailing school vessel ever built in the United States, complete with wet/dry laboratory, library, classroom, and computer laboratory.

SEA, located in Woods Hole, MA is an organization that provides undergraduates with an opportunity to participate in an academic semester long program called the SEA Semester. This program combines an intensive six week shore component in oceanography, maritime studies, and nautical science with a hands-on six week sea component aboard a traditional sailing ship. Piloting, celestial navigation, and practical seamanship are learned together with oceanographic sampling techniques and marine laboratory procedures.

RDI’s advanced, three-day/two-night, at-sea training session is will be held aboard the SEA vessel, which is scheduled to depart Los Angles, CA on September 7, 2002 and return to San Diego on September 9, 2002. RDI’s trainers will provide users with comprehensive laboratory and at-sea training on the OS system set up, data acquisition, and data interpretation - and, as a bonus, members of the SEA crew will offer hands on vessel and navigation training from the Sea Education curriculum. Students will walk away with a thorough understanding of the capabilities of the OS ADCP, and in-depth insight into the data that they collect.

This unique venue allows RDI the opportunity to intersperse plenty of well earned fun and relaxation into this lively event - and the cost is no more than students would pay for standard OS classroom product training. Space is limited for this first time event, and slots will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. Please visit http://www.rdinstruments.com for detailed event information, or contact Gina Lopez at Tel. 858-693-1178 / e-mail: glopez@rdinstruments.com.

Benthos Assists In China Airlines Black Box Recovery

NORTH FALMOUTH, MASSACHUSETTS, June 21, 2002 . . . BENTHOS, INC. (NASDAQ: BTHS) announced today that one of its Pinger Receivers was successfully used to find and recover the two 'black box' recorders from a China Airlines plane that broke up over the Taiwan Strait in May with the loss of all 225 on board.

Benthos provided American Underwater Search & Survey (AUSS) of Cataumet, Massachusetts - who had contracted with the Taiwanese government to locate the recorders - with a Benthos DPL-275 Pinger Receiver, its most advanced system for locating and tracking underwater pingers. Benthos is one of only two Federal Aviation Administration-approved suppliers of Emergency Locator Beacons and is also a maker of the receivers used to find them. These beacons or 'pingers' are mounted to the black boxes and are triggered when they are immersed in water. They emit a continuous signal for a minimum of 30 days.

With Benthos equipment in hand, Arnold Carr of AUSS arrived on the crash scene and, shortly thereafter, the cockpit voice recorder was located and recovered using the DPL-275. Later that day, the flight data recorder was retrieved in the same fashion.

Benthos Pinger Receivers have now been used to find four recorders from two commercial aircraft lost recently in Asian waters. Earlier in May, AUSS utilized the same technology to retrieve the black boxes from a China Northern Airlines plane that crashed off mainland China with the loss of all aboard. The causes of both accidents have yet to be determined and investigators hope to gain some information from the black box recorders. The flight data recorder box logs flight information while the cockpit voice recorder details conversations between pilots and air traffic controllers.

Benthos, Inc., through its Undersea Systems Division, designs, manufactures, sells and services a variety of oceanographic products for underwater tasks; and through its TapTone Package Inspection Systems Division makes systems for testing consumer packages made of glass, metal or plastic. The common stock of the Company is traded on the Nasdaq SmallCap market under the symbol BTHS. For more information, Benthos can be found on the Internet at http://www.benthos.com.

GeoAcoustics Deep Tow 2000 System To India’s National Institute Of Oceanography

India’s National Institute of Oceanography, Dona Paula, Goa, have become the latest organisation to take delivery of a GeoAcoustics Deep Tow 2000 system. The specialised deep-water survey system is to be used for gas-hydrate research, mid-oceanic ridge research and for hydrographic surveys in the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of India.

Rated to 3,000 metres depth the system employs a single co-axial armoured tow cable measuring 9km in length. To ensure signal integrity over this length of cable a combination of analogue and digital transmission techniques are utilised.

At these cable lengths, standard high-speed digital modems do not work. However, several channels of high resolution analogue data can easily be carried on such a cable, while leaving enough bandwidth free for relatively low-speed bi-directional digital links used for command, control and low bandwidth digital data from sensors such as the optional magnetometer and the attitude/depth sensors.

On board sensors including side scan sonar and sub bottom profiler give long range and high-resolution data, which is displayed at the surface on the GeoPro 4.

The system utilises GeoAcoustics widely used Dual Frequency Side Scan system and innovative GeoChirp II Sub Bottom Profiler. Whilst the Side scan needs no introduction, the SBP brings some new and exciting techniques to the sphere of underwater profiling.

Typically deep penetration systems (sparkers and boomers) rely on non-linear conversion of electrical energy to acoustic energy - very inefficient and making them unsuitable for long cable operation and poor at achieving high resolution data. Pingers are more efficient, but for a given power level cannot increase energy in the water without increasing pulse width and compromising resolution. Chirp systems, offer the potential to eliminate the trade-off between penetration and resolution but existing chirp systems have been limited by the performance of existing transducers combined with the inefficiencies of existing linear amplifiers. In practical terms this has often resulted in poor penetration in coarser sediments.

The GeoAcoustics Chirp II system addresses all these problems. The new GeoChirp II transmitter contains a better than 95 per cent efficient linear power amplifier which can deliver 5kW peak power into the acoustic transducers. This new amplifier combined with newly designed deep rated wideband transducers allows a single GeoChirp II pulse to put more energy into the water than a single boomer shot while offering even greater resolution than the original GeoChirp system. At present no other system can approach this performance, regardless of cable length. Results are described as "excellent" even in difficult coarse sands.

At the top end GeoPro 4 is used to select the appropriate chirp signal from a menu, depending upon seabed conditions, and the data is displayed such that profiler targets can be matched to the corresponding side scan trace. A full suite of enhancement tools, all accessible in real time completes the line up.

MMS Launches Online Ordering System
The Department of the Interior’s Minerals Management Service (MMS) announces the introduction of a new online ordering system that allows the customer to research well logs online and have them downloaded onto a customized CD-ROM at minimal cost. The new system offers customers savings in money, time, and energy because it makes available online all well logs that are available to the public.

"The online ordering system was created to take advantage of rapidly increasing advancements in automation technology and to keep up with customer demands," said MMS Director Johnnie Burton. "With this system, we can provide better and more efficient customer service."

Approximately 170,000 well logs with run dates of December 1995 and prior are available to the public. The logs are scanned in raster format (TIFF images) and include 1-inch and 5-inch induction, neutron density, formation density, and dipmeter logs.

On the MMS website at www.gomr.mms.gov, the new feature is designed to be flexible. Information can be retrieved quickly and easily from the index of releasable well logs. The user can search the online index for a specific well log by entering a specific area and any of the following criteria: API number, lease number, block number, well name, or log type. Once the requested logs are identified, they can be added to a shopping cart and ordered online. A fee of $15 per CD-ROM to cover the cost of supplies and mailing will be charged to the customer’s credit card. Once the credit card transaction is approved, the logs will be written to a CD, labeled, packaged, and shipped the next day. The system also allows the user to track and review past and pending orders, and to create custom labels for the CD’s.

"The new system spares MMS customers the inconvenience and expense of having to visit the Gulf of Mexico OCS Region’s Public Information Office in New Orleans to duplicate well logs on paper. As a matter of fact, after August 2002, paper copies of online well logs will no longer be available," explained Ms. Burton. "This is the latest in a series of improvements that MMS has implemented to provide better service to its many customers.

MMS is the federal agency in the U.S. Department of the Interior that manages the nation's oil, natural gas and other mineral resources on the outer continental shelf in federal offshore waters. The agency also collects, accounts for and disburses mineral revenues from federal and Indian leases. These revenues totaled nearly $10 billion in 2001 and more than $120 billion since the agency was created in 1982. Annually, nearly $1 billion from those revenues go into the Land and Water Conservation Fund for the acquisition and development of state and federal park and recreation lands.
