RD Instruments Now Offering A $3000 Reward For New ADCP "Waves" Data!
(July 9, 2002 -- San Diego, CA)-- RD Instruments is celebrating its twentieth anniversary. To mark this milestone, RDI has been offering a variety of discounts and special promotions throughout the year in an effort to thank its customers for their loyalty and support.

RDI’s latest offer includes a $3000 reward/discount to any customer that purchases a Waves Array upgrade for their new or existing Workhorse Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP). In return, RDI simply asks that their customers provide them with a brief description and "Waves" data set from a future field application. RDI is certain that the ADCP Wave Array will revolutionize the way the industry measures waves - and these data sets will clearly illustrate the unparalleled resolution and capabilities of this new technology.

Traditional pressure sensor wave gauges can produce problematic results that blur the directional data and are biased by near-surface currents. RDI’s patented new ADCP Wave Array avoids these problems, through a revolutionary new technology designed to measure multi-directional wave fields. The ADCP Wave Array allows users to collect clear, accurate wave results with unmatched 4 degree directional resolution -- in deep water or shallow water -- bottom mounted or in line - and now -- at a $3000 discount. This discount will be in effect through September 30, 2002.

To learn more about this offer and RD Instruments new "ADCP Wave Array", visit http://www.rdinstruments.com/news_specials/wavesdata.html or contact Gina Lopez at Tel. +1-858-693-1178 or e-mail glopez@rdinstruments.com.

Global Maritime And Fugro Seek To Reduce Jackup Installation Problems
Global Maritime, UK, and Fugro Ltd, UK have launched a major industry-funded project to investigate problems associated with jack–up drilling rig installations at sites where other rigs have operated.

There is often a tendency for the spudcan of the rig being installed to move towards seabed depressions, or "footprints", caused by previous installations. These adverse movements can result in structural damage, both to the rig and the existing infrastructure on the installation site. The unsatisfactory positioning often has significant lost time and cost implications and there is the potential for injury to personnel. The Global/Fugro project will help reduce the occurrence of these adverse movements with the development of a Best Practice Guideline document.

The project is being funded by BP, ENI-Agip, Ensco International, ExxonMobil, GlobalSantaFe, Keppel FELS Ltd/Offshore Technology Development Pte Ltd, Phillips, TotalFinaElf UK plc, Shell UK Expro and the UK Health and Safety Executive.

The initial project task is to acquire and collate data on past experience of jack-up installation operations where spudcan-footprint interaction has been a potential problem. These data will be collected by means of a questionnaire circulated throughout the industry. Each case of spudcan-footprint interaction will be investigated to establish the conditions and mechanisms at work; criteria will then be developed for identification of cases where difficulties could reasonably be expected.

This task will be followed by investigation of spudcan-footprint interaction prevention methods/procedures and the applicability of each of these will be researched for generic problematic soil conditions, identified from the initial project task. This research will primarily include parametric studies by theoretical analyses, including non-linear large strain 2D and 3D numerical Finite Element Analysis modelling and possible use of scale model testing. Analytical techniques and installation procedures will be developed which will help to identify potentially problematic sites and provide guidance on appropriate mitigation measures.

Copies of the questionnaire are available from Phil Wilson, Fugro Ltd. Tel: + 44 (0) 1442 240781. email: pwilson@fugro.co.uk

Snøhvit Metocean Survey In Barents Sea By Fugro GEOS Ltd
A six-month metocean survey of Statoil’s Snøhvit development in the Barents Sea saw Fugro GEOS Ltd, UK, deploy oceanographic moorings in the all-day darkness of winter and recover them in the midnight sun of summer.

Fugro GEOS deployed the near-seabed current meters at 12 locations in depths from 40 to 400m along the 162km proposed pipeline route from the Snøhvit Field to Melkøya, close to Hammerfest on Norway’s northern coast. The current meters were positioned to better than 10m accuracy by ranging to acoustic transducers that were part of each mooring. Profiles of salinity and temperature were taken to characterise the structure of the water column.

The initial deployment was not as straightforward as the final recovery: “There could not have been a greater contrast between the endless cold nights of the deployment, when the vessel’s deck was certainly Snøhvit (snow white) and the 24-hour sunshine of the recovery,” commented Alastair Stagg, Fugro GEOS’ project manager.

“However, data results match our consistently high returns from warmer climes and a preliminary look shows we’ve got some very interesting data that capture the great variety of oceanographic conditions along the proposed pipeline’s route.”

The Snøhvit survey was Fugro GEOS’ first within the Arctic Circle, despite over 20 years of experience of deploying oceanographic moorings. Fugro GEOS also provides meteorological and oceanographic consultancy services worldwide that range from developing design criteria for oil and gas projects to weather forecasts for ocean tow routes.

Geotrace Awarded Two Enhanced Imaging Contracts By Norsk Agip A/S In The North Sea
LONDON, UK - July 9, 2002 - GEOTRACE has announced that it's Reservoir Services Group has been awarded two contracts to apply its proprietary technique, High Frequency Imaging (HFI) on two surveys in the Norwegian and Danish sectors of the North Sea. The work is for Norsk AGIP.

HFI is an exclusive technique that utilizes seismic, wireline and borehole seismic data to recover usable high frequencies not previously thought possible. The enhanced imaging of data provides increased resolution for structural and stratigraphic interpretation.
