Gas-tight Deep Ocean Sampler From WS
|
A
new gas-tight, deep ocean water sampling instrument has been
developed by WS EnviroTech, UK.
Called
AquaLAB, four units have already been supplied: to Lamont-Doherty
Earth Observatory; to the University of East Anglia, UK;
to Southampton Oceanography Centre, UK; and to the Centre
for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS),
UK. AquaLAB samples dissolved gases such as CFC, SF6, CO2
and other tracers. It uses a new sampling technique developed
by WS EnviroTech by which each sample is collected and stored
in one of 50 titanium foil bags which, after rigorous testing,
are verified as being completely gas tight.
AquaLAB
may be deployed for extended periods of up to a year or
more; or in profiling applications when attached to a standard
conductivity/temperature/depth (CTD) rosette; or as a stand-alone
sampling system using its own winch.
As
well as its primary application of deep ocean water sampling
AquaLAB may also be used for ultra-precise time-series salinity
determination, chemical composition analysis and other key
measurements which help develop a greater understanding
of the deep ocean environment.
AquaLAB's
design is based on five years’ experience gained with WS
EnviroTech's Aqua Monitor which is operating on a number
of biological monitoring projects worldwide. More from:

| C&C Announces Completion Of Its Marine Survey For MEDGAZ |
C
& C Technologies completed a survey of the Mediterranean seabed
on July 12, 2002 for MEDGAZ. This survey was conducted to
seek a suitable pipeline corridor between Algeria and Spain.
The two survey vessels, Odin Finder and Rig Supporter, which
mobilized for the survey work in the beginning of June 2002,
demobilized at Almeria during the second week of July 2002.
MEDGAZ
(Socidad para el Estudio y la Promocion del Gasoducto Argelia
Europa, via Esparna, S.A.) is a company formed by CEPSA,
Sonatrach, BP, Endesa, ENI/Snam, Gaz de France and Totalfinaelf,
to study the transport of gas from Algeria to Europe. The
pipeline system being studied will be able to transport
natural gas, of prescribed specifications, at the rates
of 8 to 16 BCM/year (BCM - Billion Cubic Meter). The pipeline
on the Algerian side will have a landfall at Beni Saf and
on the Spanish side landfall will be in the province of
Almeria.
The
survey used the most current seabed mapping technologies
including the most modern multi-beam equipment mounted on
an unmanned submarine named HUGIN 3000. This submarine,
also called AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle), operates
totally autonomously, without any physical connection to
the parent ship, carrying out its 50-hour missions 40 meters
above the seabed. It can, however, be instructed to revise
its mission in real time by using acoustic communications
from the mother ship when it is necessary. She is the only
commercial survey AUV in the World capable of working in
water depth to 3000 meters. HUGIN 3000 is owned by C & C
Technologies of Lafayette, LA, USA and was used for the
first time in Europe on the MEDGAZ survey. The survey was
supervised by MEDGAZ engineers and accomplished all of their
objectives. Information supplied by C & C’s AUV provided
ample information to determine a suitable pipeline corridor
crossing the Alboran Sea area on the Western Mediterranean
in record-breaking water depths exceeding 2100 meters.

| MMS Releases Important Study For Communities And Families
In Louisiana |
MMS
Releases Important Study on Effects of Offshore Oil and Gas
Activity on the Communities and Families of New Iberia and
Morgan City, Louisiana.
The
effects of the offshore oil and gas industry on two Louisiana
cities, New Iberia and Morgan City, and the families who
live in them are investigated in a new socioeconomic report
released today by the Minerals Management Service (MMS).
The study, Social and Economic Impacts of OCS Activity on
Individuals and Families, was produced by a team of social
scientists from the University of Arizona’s Bureau of Applied
Research in Anthropology and 14 teacher-researchers in both
cities. Input was received from hundreds of local volunteers,
and the findings are found in the two volumes that make
up this study.
New
Iberia and Morgan City are located in Southern Louisiana.
Both are involved in diverse activities associated with
the exploration, development, and production of oil and
gas from the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS). New Iberia is
a sugarcane town that acquired an oil sector. Morgan City
is a shrimping and commercial port on the Atchafalaya River
that was strategically poised to become a prominent fabricating,
service, and supply center for the oil and gas industry.
The communities, with populations of 30,000 and 12,000,
respectively, are amenable in size for ethnographic study
which, in its broadest sense, endeavors to understand the
social, political, economic, and cultural dynamics of communities.
The
study found that offshore oil and gas activity is the source
of many kinds of workplaces and patterns in which many different
lifestyles develop. Workers and their families have indicated
that the nature and extent of OCS-related effects vary according
to industry sector and position within the sector and the
company. Factors that influence effects include the stability
and vulnerability of employment in the sector, wages and
opportunities for advancement, work schedule patterns, and
safety. Within and among sectors, company responses to industry
fluctuations, restructuring, and other changes in the oil
and gas industry differ considerably, and these responses
contribute to the impacts felt by workers and families.
The
results of this research are reported in two companion volumes.
Volume I surveys the effect of OCS activities on workers
in diverse sectors of the industry, on individuals and families,
and on communities. Volume II, Case Studies, looks at the
communities of New Iberia and Morgan City, the multigenerational
attitudes towards work in the oil and gas industry, and
recent changes in two transportation sectors, trucking and
offshore supply vessels.
This
report is available on compact disc for $15.00. A limited
number of paper copies (the set of both volumes costs $30.00)
are available from the Gulf of Mexico OCS Region office
of the Minerals Management Service by asking for OCS Study
MMS 2002-022 and MMS 2002-023. The office is located at
1201 Elmwood Park Blvd. in suburban New Orleans. Telephone
requests may be placed at 1-800-200-GULF (local 736-2519).
Credit card orders are accepted. The report will also be
available from the National Technical Information Service
in the near future. Reference copies will placed in selected
Federal Depository libraries.
MMS
is the federal agency in the U.S. Department of the Interior
that manages the nation's oil, natural gas and other mineral
resources on the outer continental shelf in federal offshore
waters. The agency also collects, accounts for and disburses
mineral revenues from federal and Indian leases. These revenues
totaled nearly $10 billion in 2001 and more than $120 billion
since the agency was created in 1982. Annually, nearly $1
billion from those revenues go into the Land and Water Conservation
Fund for the acquisition and development of state and federal
park and recreation lands. MMS’s website address is http://www.mms.gov
