Maritime Surveys Ltd. Invests In State Of The Art Multi-beam System
Maritime Surveys Limited, a member of the Atlantic Marine group of companies, announces that it has acquired the first SeaBat 8160 multibeam echosounder system from Reson, the world-leader in high-resolution multibeam survey data acquisition and imaging systems. This latest SeaBat system has undergone extensive sea trials and it is currently installed on the MV Scotian Shore, one of the company's fleet of purpose-built survey vessels at its operations base in Shoreham, Sussex UK. The vessel is now available for charter with the SeaBat 8160 system and a full survey spread.

The new SeaBat 8160 complements major recent investment by Maritime Surveys in survey systems which will be used primarily to support Maritime Surveys in its increasing number of contracts in surveying routes for new telecommunications cables systems across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. A large number of new cables are being planned to cope with increasing demand for bandwidth as a result of the growth in the Internet or world wide web. In addition to the telecommunications market, Maritime Surveys will use the new SeaBat 8160 in offshore surveys for oil and gas exploration and field development, and resource assessment and environmental surveys for the marine aggregates industry.

Alastair MacDonald, Managing Director of Maritime Surveys said: "Following extensive sea trials this month we have included the SeaBat 8160 system as a key element in our expansion plans to respond to the increasing demand for our offshore survey capabilities. This investment in the latest vessel-mounted multibeam survey technology from Reson complements the significant investment made by Maritime Surveys in upgrading our fleet, additional tonnage, survey personnel and facilities."

Maritime Surveys is based in Shoreham, Sussex, where the company has its own berthing and vessel management facilities directly alongside its purpose built offices. Worldwide Rentals Offered By Seatronics via New Singapore Office
LEADING marine equipment rental and sales company Seatronics Ltd, which is part of the family-owned George Craig Group, has opened an office in Singapore to supply equipment for sale and rent to the survey and ROV markets in South East Asia. Five people are being employed initially at the office which has storage space totalling 2,500 square feet, a calibration centre, technical workshop and general offices.

The new facility in Singapore means Seatronics has more support bases than its competitors and greater coverage throughout the world. The company also has bases in Aberdeen, Great Yarmouth, Houston and Abu Dhabi. Managing Director for Seatronics in Asia, Stuart Kendall, said: "We will be concentrating on our core market supplying sales and rental equipment to the survey and ROV markets in South East Asia."

"Singapore is the main supply point for the Asia oil and gas industries supporting a large area including Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, China, Korea and Japan. We will also support Australasia. With these countries now emerging from the Asian recession and a general upturn in the oil and gas industry, Asia and Australasia will play a bigger role in the supply of gas and petroleum products to a worldwide market. With the predicted growth in Asia, Seatronics is planning to expand further in the area, employing more staff and extending the work of the Singapore office to other markets. Global Marine Reaches Settlement In Transocean Sedco Forex Dispute
Global Marine Inc. (NYSE:GLM) announced today that a settlement has been reached between Global Marine Drilling Company and a subsidiary of Transocean Sedco Forex with respect to a bareboat charter for the drilling rig Glomar Grand Banks. Drilling Record Set In Venezuela, December 4, 2000
A world record for drilling with a 12 ¼-inch bit was set by Venezuela's Sincor heavy crude project, in which Statoil has a 15 percent interest. The bit was used to deviate eight well paths from vertical to horizontal over a total length of 16,805 feet, compared with a previous record of 12,015 feet. Officials said new technology has been adopted for direct transfer of downhole data to geological simulation modules. This gives everyone involved access to updated information via an intranet, with opportunities to take quick decisions while drilling ahead.

Baker Hughes, Schlumberger Finalize Seismic Deal
Oilfield service giants Schlumberger Ltd. and Baker Hughes Inc. merged their industry-leading seismic divisions into a streamlined entity Thursday. Schlumberger (NYSE:SLB - news) owns 70 percent of the newly created venture, called Western GECO, with Houston-based Baker Hughes (NYSE:BHI - news) holding the remaining share. Schlumberger, with dual headquarters in Paris and New York, paid $500 million to Baker Hughes, which is being used to pay down debt.

The two firms decided to merge their seismic fleets and other assets last May to cut costs and wring savings from that crucial segment of the exploration business, which had been suffering from excess capacity. At the time of the announcement, the seismic divisions were the largest two in the world.
The merger still awaits regulatory approval in the United Kingdom.
The former president of Western Geophysical, Gary Jones, will head the new company.
